ELVIS KING CREOLE FEBRUARY 1962 CANADA LP SEALED IN LOOSE BAGGIE LPE-1884

This record comes out of a collection of Elvis records that I purchased 15 years ago. The collector to whom these records belonged to had bought two copies of every Elvis record upon release (LPE, LSP, LPM) from the early 1960s onwards. One copy was opened and the other was left sealed and I only purchased the sealed copies that were in this collection. The sealed copies included LSP, LPM, and LPE editions and I only opened a few of these sealed records over the years, including stereo black label copies of “Speedway” and “Kissin Cousins” and a black label LPE electronically processed copy of “50,000,000 Elvis Fans”.

I have decided to part with a few of my sealed records over the next several weeks. This week will consist of sealed LPE pressings and one or two weeks will be devoted to sealed original copies of Elvis’ 1970s recordings. A couple of weeks will possibly be devoted to some insanely rare and sealed LPM pressings and I may also auction a few sealed records from the 1960’s with bonus photos inside.

AUCTION DESCRIPTION

Up for auction is a long play record of ELVIS PRESLEY titled:

“KING CREOLE”

RCA-LPE-1884

This record has always been one of the prized pieces in my collection and I must admit that I am somewhat reluctant to list it this week on E-bay. This is a still sealed copy of “King Creole” in a loose baggy! This is an insanely rare piece to own not just because it is sealed from the early 1960s but because it is in a loose baggy which you rarely see nowadays on both Elvis long and extended play records.

A few special notes should be made about this record. First, the seal is intact all the way around the record and I don’t see any breaks in the seal at all. The backside of the record cover is snow white and the front cover displays very vibrant colors. There is a sticker on the backside of the record which reads “Hudson’s Bay Company” and I actually have many records with stickers from this store on it. This sticker also has some numbers and letters on it too. In addition, you can peek inside the mouth of the record cover and a white inner sleeve is visible. And on the back cover, there is “(C) by Radio Corporation of America, 1958” and “TMK(S) @ Radio Corporation of America” among other notations.

All of these points indicate to me that this is a February 1962 first pressing making it more than 50 years old. As with all my records, this one has been stored in a Japanese Mylar sleeve in an early 1960s platter pak.   

ITEM CONDITION

Vinyl: Assumed to be Mint (Sealed)

Cover: Near Mint – Mint

There is a tiny bump to the bottom right hand corner of the record cover but the cover is still Near Mint to Mint.

GRADING

I have been collecting vinyl for 25 years and I have always used the “Goldmine Grading System” to grade my records.

In particular, I would like to note that I don’t believe that grading standards should be relaxed for older records. Rather, record grading standards should be the same for records pressed in the 1950s and for a newly released record. It annoys me when I read some sellers describing a record as “mint for its age”. As far as I am concerned, what we classify as “mint” or “near mint” or any other grade for that matter does not change based on the age of the record. Standards should not deteriorate!

In addition, I assume that the contents of sealed records are mint since they are factory fresh, never having been tampered with. However, in reality, some records may not be mint on the first pull. Also, if a record is sealed and the cover appears absolutely perfect, I will still grade the cover near mint to mint.

Finally, even though a long play or box set is sealed, I feel that the exterior of the package still needs to be graded very carefully. Thus, I look for any defects on the exterior of still sealed items such as seam splits, creases that are visible through the shrinkwrap, discoloration on the cover, and damaged corners. Any defects to the exterior packaging of still sealed records will be noted in my ads, including cut-out slices and punch holes.

PACKAGING

All records are packaged to the best of my ability to prevent them from being damaged in transit. In particular, I take great care to ensure that the corners of record covers do not get dinged in transit.

When I buy records on E-bay I always ask that the E-bay seller packs the record so there is no chance that the corners of the cover can get damaged in transit. I feel that if I buy near mint to mint cover, then I should get a near mint to mint cover. And if I sell a record that has the cover graded near mint to mint, then that is what you should get as a buyer.
