ELVIS COSTELLO ARMED FORCES - 1979 UK LP - Rare Complete: LP, 7” EP, 4 Postcards. Condition is "Used". Dispatched with Royal Mail Signed For® 2nd Class.
This is the complete first edition Armed Forces set. As well as the LP there’s a live 7” 3-track EP recorded at Hollywood High, the album cover is a complex folding construction where instead of sliding the record out of its sleeve, you unpack it, and there’s finally a set of 4 postcards of the band too. The sleeve also has the original hype sticker on the front, proclaiming the free EP. These complete sets are increasingly difficult to come across.
Unfortunately track one on side 2 (Goon Squad) has one jump and has since I bought this in the early 80s, so I’ve lowered the price to accommodate this. Other than that, this is a lovely pack.
Costello’s third album was a big breakthrough- both here and in the USA. It had his biggest single (still his biggest selling single) in Oliver’s Army and Accidents Will Happen, but it still, for some reason, doesn’t seem to have as much love as his first two LPs. Perhaps it’s because the LP is totally front-loaded with the big singles being tracks 1 and 3, perhaps they didn’t like their singer becoming a big name. It’s still top quality though - and boy did Costello churn the records out in his first decade. This is his 3rd album in 18 months.
