Sitting atop the charts in 1975, Elton John and Bernie Taupin recalled their rise to power in Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy, their first explicitly conceptual effort since Tumbleweed Connection.
It's no coincidence that it's their best album since then, showcasing each at the peak of his power, as John crafts supple, elastic, versatile pop and Taupin's inscrutable wordplay is evocative, even moving.
What's best about the record is that it works best of a piece — although it entered the charts at number one, this only had one huge hit in "Someone Saved My Life Tonight," which sounds even better here, since it tidily fits into the musical and lyrical themes. And although the musical skill on display here is dazzling, as it bounces between country and hard rock within the same song, this is certainly a grower.
The album needs time to reveal its treasures, but once it does, it rivals Tumbleweed in terms of sheer consistency and eclipses it in scope, capturing John and Taupin at a pinnacle.

LABELS: The labels are CLEAN and BRIGHT with NO unwanted marks/writing and NO evident spindles
VINYL Visual: The vinyl still retains its DEEP, LIKE-NEW, GLOSSY SHEEN and is practically UNMARKED. When held up to the light the DEEP RED nature of this pressing is clearly evident (I apologise for the poor photograph of the vinyl colour but I found it very difficult to capture as the camera has to be pointed directly into the light)
VINYL Audio: BEAUTIFUL, CRYSTAL CLEAR, VERY SHARP and VERY STRONG audio reproduction. SENSATIONAL DELIVERY THROUGHOUT. There are NO jumps, NO sticks, NO scratches, just a little surface noise and background ticks on some (not all) of the quieter sections (absolutely nothing major and nothing I found intrusive AT ALL). The record SOUNDS SUPERB and plays to an extremely high standard with GREAT CLARITY, NO groove-wear and NO distortion (its hardly been played) and must be very critically graded EXCELLENT for audio. NOT over-graded in ANY way as I use strict RECORD COLLECTOR grading standards (please refer to my feedback and 'about me' page). FANTASTIC FIRST PRESS, RED VINYL COPY
SLEEVE: The gatefold sleeve is in NEAR MINT condition with very little edge wear. The thick spine is straight and true with all text is CLEAR and BOLD. Beautiful CRISP, CLEAN sleeve
BOOKLETS: Both original booklets are in SUPERB condition with little evidence of ever being handled - NEAR MINT
POSTER: The original full colour LARGE poster is also NEAR MINT
