Label Conditions: Both immaculate with that fantastic super-rich deep colour and freshness, struggling to find a noteworthy spindle mark at all, any traces are truly minuscule. This is a stunning example with supreme labels, playing surfaces, sound and cover. This another prog classic from the superb collection of very lightly played records, purchased from new by the one-and-only owner who played them very sparingly on a high quality system.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 142 grams. A very impressive weight for this album, issued within the oil crisis era where so many where made thin and flimsy. This is a record for the prog connoisseur.

Rarity: Moderate in theory but the early pressings on Pink Rim are harder to find and this is up there with the very best copy I have ever seen or heard. A very heavy pressing in a superb cover with truly awesome clean sound and this is a difficult record with some very quiet passages. But this one excelled on play-grade and was a delight to hear again.

Brief Info: Fourth brilliant album by the popular progressive trio and what a stunning copy this is, it plays beautifully with awesome clean sound. This is almost certainly the heaviest pressing of this album I have ever held, this is often found on the later Manticore label and these will be far lighter. An album of outstanding tracks and the sound quality is breathtakingly high – a real hi-fi recording that will make worthy systems really excel – BUT, you need a top pressing and preferably one hardly even played – it’s HERE. Virtuoso musicianship with all three members excelling again, this is high class, high tempo prog-rock and fans wanting a truly magnificent copy need not look any further. Not only that, the beautiful cover is in equally stunning condition and includes the blue Island ‘Basing Street’ address inner sleeve. Copies this clean are at a real premium, do not lose this one.

Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very high.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): an unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. A real heavyweight, made with thick card and superbly constructed, a quality item and rarely seen with so little wear. This one was printed and made in England by Tinsley Robor.

Cover Front: Wow, this looks really special, the colour very rich and fresh with an almost pastel-like finish and hue. Any handling traces to the matt surface are very few, light and minor as are any creases (just two fine ones on the spine edge) or marks. As clean as when issued and the lack or rubbing makes this a real work-of-art.

Cover Back: Very similar again and exceptional given this is more vulnerable with the thick record pressed against it for around 39 years. A mere trace of a very fine arc rub near the top edge and less than a hint near the bottom. Again, any marks, rubs or blemishes are tiny, few and faint. I cannot see a single crease, even an edge hairline at all. This back includes the large Island i logo with the Basing Street address.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Truly beautiful artwork and looking practically brand new.

Top Edges: Both unworn as new and dead straight too.

Bottom Edges: Very slight rub traces only and again straight. Being the traditional storage edges, these will seldom be seen with so little wear.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The front edge is sealed and tucked with a lovely clean unworn end. The opening back edge is mostly sharp with little wear and guaranteed untrimmed. One or two tiny burr traces with any thickening registering little.

Spine and Text: A very thick and robust spine and in super condition also. Solid, straight with just one small compression. Folded square, the edges meet up almost perfectly together and parallel. All text is perfect and unworn and any rubbing is tiny – just a little at the ends and a chip on the top foldline hinge. I have seldom seen the spine folds so unworn and these retain nigh-on full ink retention.

Corners: Tiny tip rubs on the right ones and only very small on the vulnerable spine ends. Again finding one with less will prove very difficult. Excellent to near mint shape is retained.

Cover Summary: An exceptional and beautifully attractive all-round example of this very fragile 1970’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This gorgeous item should please most collectors, the supreme artwork has more than stood the test of time and I doubt if it’s seen the light-of-day for decades.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: the original blue Island inner has the usual glue browning on the edges, few seem to avoid this totally, here it’s moderate. Some mild crinkle rather than creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs. The lining still solidly attached and both sides retaining a rich colour, so many of these fade badly over the years. This includes the original text address: ‘island records ltd basing street london w11’ .

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT(-), a superb visual copy that is very clean, shiny with an intense black finish. Heavy pressed with deep and wide grooves for super-fi sound, these have complex patterns and are pristine clean. Any surface trace marks are tiny, very few and faint. A copy hardly played or handled and typical from this lot. Visually a super record that should please most-all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This very impressive ‘Trilogy’ plays up to its high visual grading with practically nothing to fault – and this is not the easiest record to find that will do so. With such detail and complex sound embedded, this was a record that could be easily worn if not treated with due respect and many often have crackle and distortion – this has none. Strong, dynamic and powerful sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is astonishing with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. This is a record with real hi-fi quality and will make any worthy system sound fantastic. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing for a fairly difficult album. The beginning of ‘Abaddon’s Bolero’ is what you would expect, a very quiet, near silent beginning that gradually builds up. These types of tracks are the ultimate test for good pressings and silence is near impossible, but this copy plays supremely well with virtually nothing unwanted. Few copies will match or outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, focused and precise. Clearly well stored and carefully handled within a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove very difficult indeed to match or find significantly better. My highest recommendation is mandatory, do not lose this one.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
