Emerson Lake & Palmer
'Brain Salad Surgery'
Manticore, UK, 1973
K53501
CONCURRENTLY MY favourite Emerson Lake & Palmer album. This collosal work is further enhanced by one of the era's greatest album cover - a hugely complicated fold out construction decorated with H. R. Gieger's mesmerising cover art.
Musically the band go for broke. The main focus is on the gargantuan 'Karn Evil 9' composition - a work that stretches both sides of the vinyl. It is without doubt one of the most dynamic progressive rock pieces to have ever been composed, its contents ranging from quiet piano segments to raging torrents of heavy prog rock bluster. At times they sound like King Crimson gone particualrly insane with rage and at other moments they come across as delicate and measured as Barclay James Harvest. The closing segment ('3rd Impression') allows Keith Emerson to power up his Moogs and Organs for a hugely inpressive climax.
But its not all a serious progressive neo classical master class as there is room for some frivolity and lighter faire notably the re-working of that glorious hymm 'Jerusalem', an addaption of 'Toccata' (serious heavy duty progging here), the beautiful Lake written and sung ballad 'Still...You Turn Me On' and the chippy 'Benny The Bouncer', a music hall parody.
I vividly remember Alan 'Fluff' Freeman premiering this album on his Saturday afternoon BBC Radio One show and being awestruck by its power and depth. If only we could get back to such simple pleasures.
Pressing: Manticore, UK, 1973
Vinyl: Lovely clean condition. Just minor signs of any use. Grades as a nice Ex
Cover: Again, barely any signs of use. Issued in a twin gatefold sleeve opening from the center outwards. Experienced collectors will know that, because of the fragile nature of its design, this cover is the most difficult ELP album to find without any damage - usually the front die cut flaps are bent, frayed or torn and the rear is prone to major ring wear. This copy looks like it walked out of the factory yesterday. Beautiful and impossible to find like this 42 years after release. Grades as MINT-!
Inserts: Comes complete with the often missing full colour six page fold out poster - slightly thumbed.
Matrix:
Still sealed!
