Elmer Gantry's Velvet Opera: self-titled First Album - Original PROMO (Radio DJ) Stereo First Pressing, 1968:
If you are reading this auction, you already know how rare this record is as one of the truly interesting relics of the Psychedelic Era.
Elmer Gantry's Velvet Opera, at various times also known as "Velvet Opera", was a British rock band active in the late 1960s. Members of the band would later become members of The Strawbs, Hudson Ford, and Stretch.
The group emerged from a soul/blues band called 'The Five Proud Walkers'. After supporting Pink Floyd on tour, they were inspired to change their approach and become a more psychedelic outfit. The band consolidated as Richard Hudson on drums, John Ford on bass, Colin Forster on lead guitar, Jimmy Horrocks (Horovitz) on organ and flute (who left early in the band's history, and Dave Terry on vocals and harmonica. Initially just calling themselves Velvet Opera, they developed their full name when Terry took to wearing a cape and preacher's hat in the style of the title character in the 1960 film adaptation of Sinclair Lewis' novel, Elmer Gantry.
I'm the original owner of this album. Got it new while when it first came out, while working at a college radio station. This LP has been in dry, indoor storage since new in 1968, and is a genuinely rare record today. It's a Radio/DJ promotional copy, as noted on the cover, and is of course a first-pressing record. Please see photos for details.
As with most of my records, I played these only once or twice, and then they were left at home, as I was away at college. Never got back to being home again or playing them, so the record is still in "almost-unplayed" (excellent or like-new) condition. The cover is in very good condition, with very light wear. Original plain white sleeve in excellent condition with light yellowing due to age. This is a Stereo LP, and the original Epic Records number is BN 26415 (or BN-26415) as listed on both sides of the label. The "Demonstration Not For Sale" marking is clearly noted on the back of the album. Hopefully you'll enjoy adding this unusual album to your collection!
Recent ebay sales of this rare album have been in the $177-$200 range, and those sales were NOT for the more rare promo DJ version of this album!
Shipping will be by USPS "Media Mail", and that there's no sales tax. Please see other record listings and stay tuned for future listings. Many items yet to come, mainly rock and psych, including radio, DJ, and promo releases. Also many 45s, including promo copies. Thanks for your interest!
