Ella Fitzgerald was accompanied by an orchestra arranged by Frank DeVol for this fine studio session; Most of the songs are veteran standards, Stan Getz's warm tenor helps out on four tunes, and her voice was so strong and appealing during this era that all of her recordings from the mid- to late '50s are enjoyable and easily recommended.

This copy of the Ella Fitzgerald's legendary 1961 torch-song album (presented here on a mega-rare white label promo copy with custom "publicity release" cover never commercially released) comes with a custom, promo-only cover with the introductory note from none other than Norman Granz, a proverbial founding father of mothern Jazz. Starting in 1946 with his classic "Jazz at the Philharmonic" series, and ending with his death 16 years ago (November 28, 2001) Norman Granz supervised, produced and otherwise prodded, pushed, humored and bamboozled - not always delicately - some of the biggest names in American music of the XX century into recording some of their finest gems and veritable masterpieces. From Billie Holiday to Ella Fitzgerald, from Anita O'Day to Fred Astaire to Louis Armstrong to Gerry Mulligan to Stan Getz to Antonio Carlos  Jobim to Sonny Stitt , from Art Tatum to Oscar Peterson, from Teddy Wilson to Bud Powell, from Ben Webster to Lester Young to Coleman Hawkins to Charlie Parker, from Count Basie and Duke Ellington and from Dizzie Gillespie to Johnny Hodges and…and…and…everyone and their uncle was a protégé or disciple of Norm Granz at one point of another. Initially misperceived as being too rigid and formal and unnecessarily stifling of his artists' originality and creativity, Norman Granz has been undergoing very intense positive critical re-evaluation lately, and is more likely to be seen these days as a far-sighted genius who guided and streamlined his artists' creative energies in the most productive, efficient manner, while not allowing their weaknesses and histrionics to dissipate their vital force. A true visionary, if Jazz music ever had one.

THE WHITE LABEL PROMO, RADIO STATION-, AUDITION OR DEMONSTRATION COPIES AND RELEASES (such as the one we have here) were often distributed to the radio stations before the record was released to the public, sometimes as much as four months ahead. These records are generally considered to be the "first among equals": the VERY FIRST generation and the VERY FIRST pressings of the particular title; a PROTOTYPE and the earliest known official pressing of the record.

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant).For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(c)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          White Promo Label version of this title is much rarer that a regular, commercially released, version of this title. We estimate that stock copies of this album outnumber promo copies by a ratio of at least 200:1.

(e)           The record is STILL in its original inner, perforated plastic baggy, which has - apparently with success - shielded the record from the harmful impact of elements over many years!

(f)            Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER

THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD+(+)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has a partially UNGLUED (NOT SPLIT!) bottom seam; This  seam was delicately taped by the previous owner with a piece of transparent scotch tape

-        Cover has a tape residue (yellowish discoloration from the removed piece of old and aged scotch tape)

-        Cover has some writing on its front side (name of the previous owner written in plain pencil in one corner, about ½ x 1 inches in size)

-        Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3

-        The cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-        Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging   (nothing significant).

-        Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine  (BARELY VISIBLE)

-        Front cover has a few yellowish dust speckles scattered here and there (these tiny spots are not overly obtrusive or distracting)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No split seams

-        No ring wear

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No stamps

-        No tearing: no chips, dents or nicks on the seams

-        No peel-off marks

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
