In 1961 Ella recorded one of her most refined, intimate and beautiful album ever done by a female Jazz singer.Here the band is sparse, tactful and subtle ; no strings or heavy brass section to disturb the real deep music. Ella sings softly and perfectly some classics among their best versions here such as "Round Midnight", "Good Morning Heartache" and "Night in Tunisia". "Cry Me a River" has more jazz feeling than any other version. In the more swinging tracks like "Clap Hands, Here Comes Charlie!", her voice is brimming with contagious and enthusiastic energy, her perfect pitch.Slow and fast tracks bring a very pleasant and various atmosphere.

Ella Fitzgerald's most consistent studio album in her entire repertoire. You know it's funny, most artists take their album on the road, but this album is an example of taking the road to the studio.

No doubt Ella's live show experience in comparison to her studio experience were two different animals.I found her studio albums to be wanting usually, at times over produced, singing one particular songbook, or violins and backing vocals all over the place.

Clap Hands, Here Comes Charlie! is an example of a stripped down live in studio type journey. Falling back on old classics, singing the now, and singing hints of what's to come…meaning production is full and a tad edgier…heavier. Just a tad more in your face.…and gotta love that Herb Ellis added on guitar here…a rare instrument in an early Ella band.

So many swinging colors to enjoy here!

Never understood why I don't hear more about this album. Rare to hear Ella singing in the studio with a small jazz group. Ella's version of "Cry me a River" outdoes any other I've heard...and "Good Morning Heartache", even better than Billie's. "Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most" and "Round Midnight" are standout! The excitement of her live recordings captured in the studio...without all the chatter and applause! Ella's voice is as smooth as ever. The previously unreleased bonus tracks on the cd are great additions. One of my favorite Ella albums!

Another typically wonderful album by Ella Fitzgerald in her prime, this set augments the original LP (which finds Ella joined by pianist Lou Levy, guitarist Herb Ellis, bassist Joe Mondragon, and drummer Stan Levey) with three previously unreleased selections from the same era (with Levey, bassist Wilfred Middlebrooks, and drummer Gus Johnson). Ella is in fine form on such numbers as "A Night in Tunisia," an emotional "You're My Thrill," "Jersey Bounce," "Clap Hands! Here Comes Charlie," and an unissued "The One I Love (Belongs to Somebody Else)." Although not reaching the heights of her live performances, this is an excellent (and somewhat underrated) set.

 (IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG NEAR MINT. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           Stereo  pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more preferable to its mono  counterpart. The mix is more graphic, the sound resolution more precise, and the channel separation (which does not exist on mono version) adds a whole new dimension to the music. Also, the stereo mixes are (by definition) somewhat different than on the mono version. We estimate that mono copies of this album outnumber stereo copies  by a ratio of at least 10:1.

(d)          The record comes in a hi-grade MFSL PVC inner sleeve, which has - apparently with success - shielded the record from the harmful impact of elements over many years!

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                               THE COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging  (nothing significant)

-        Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2.

-        Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine  (nothing significant)

-        Back cover has a few yellowish dust speckles scattered here and there (these tiny spots are not overly obtrusive or distracting)  (BARELY VISIBLE)
