ELIAS HULK Unchained (Youngblood UK 1970)

Just look at that cover! How times have changed since 1970, when it was thought to be a great idea to house your debut LP in a sleeve depicting a very primitive rendition of The Hulk in the midst of decapitating two naked ladies. I love it, and it really is a period piece time capsule back to that post-psychedelic period when things were getting dark and heavy, with love peace and flowers in short supply. Given the raw brutality of the sleeve, the music of Elias Hulk is surprising varied, thoughtful and complex, with late psychedelic urges, beautiful pastoral passages, eastern ventures and jazzy surprises amongst the early hard psychedelic rock that at times verges on punk/metal. This is one of the crown jewels of early heavy progressive rock/late psych LPs. It has been a heavyweight collectable for decades now, very sought after and very thin on the ground. Very few of these turn up now, and even fewer with the vinyl in this EX condition.

Grading

Vinyl: EX lovely copy, looks and plays near perfect with barely any noise at all, couple of spindle marks around centre holes both sides indicating only a few plays, but no obvious marks on the vinyl, even under bright light. A top copy.
Sleeve: Would be VG+ with very nice laminated front and very little in the way of general wear, but reverse has had some additional art applied, including the letters 'LSD' cut out from a magazine and stuck on and some writing/doodles - see pictures. I personally think the 'Lsd' looks pretty cool and quite appropriate for this LP. There is also a small punch hole on the back part of the sleeve as pictured and the only blemish on the front is a ding bottom left which has caused some light creasing, as seen in detail on the final picture.

Grading

M- As new, no marks of any kind whatsoever.

EX Perhaps a few featherlight whispy marks, but no scratches or deterioration in sound

VG+ Some light marks on the vinyl, but nothing that should cause clicks or pops, just occasional light surface noise.

VG Some heavier marks and maybe a few scratches that will cause some noise, but will still be a very enjoyable listen with definitely no sticks or skips or constant surface noise.
