AND IS HOUSED IN THE ORIGINAL TEXTURED (inside as well as outside and with a factory sealed left side edge), MATTE GATEFOLD SLEEVE DESIGNED BY HIPGNOSIS AND "Printed and made by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd. " DATE CODED "7112" (1971, DECEMBER )
COMPLETE WITH THE ORIGINAL HARVEST COMPANY INNER SLEEVE (which is also becoming a bit of a rarity in itself)

Electric Light Orchestra's debut album is an astonishing creation in its own right, but neophyte listeners should be aware that it bears very little resemblance to the sound for which ELO would become known on its subsequent records.
No Answer, as it ended up being called in America through a miscommunication with ELO's U.S. label, is a minimalist work by comparison with anything on the band's later albums.
The core trio of Roy Wood, Jeff Lynne, and Bev Bevan, augmented by one horn player and a violinist, approaches the music alternately like a hard rock band attacking a song and a string ensemble playing a chamber piece.
Filled with surprisingly loose playing and sounds throughout, and with a psychedelic aura hovering over most of the music.
Written and sung by Lynne, "10538 Overture" is the opener and the best song on the album. Wood's "Look at Me Now," by comparison, plays like a sweet, melodic follow-up to "Beautiful Daughter" from the Move's Shazam, with some digressions on the oboe and a cello and violin subbing for the guitars. The rest moves from period-style popular songs to strangely cinematic conceptual pieces, on which the rock elements almost disappear in favor of quasi-classical playing by all concerned.
A beautiful acoustic guitar workout by Wood, "1st Movement" also features the song's composer on the oboe, while "Mr. Radio," an exercise in 1920s nostalgia written and sung by Lynne, digresses for a moment into 1940s-style classical piano pyrotechnics. His "Whisper in the Night" ends the album with a lean and textured acoustic sound that, ironically, disappeared from ELO's repertory when he exited the lineup following these sessions.

TOP UK FIRST PRESSING OF A TREMENDOUS LP - THE FINEST COPY I HAVE SEEN IN A LONG WHILE AND VERY, VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Track Listing:
Side 1: 10538 Overture / Look At Me Now / Nellie Takes Her Bow / Battle of Marston Moor (July 2nd 1644)
Side 2: 1st Movement / Mr Radio / Manhattan Rumble (49th Street Massacre) / Queen Of The Hours / Whisper In The Night

LABELS: The HARVEST labels are CLEAN and BRIGHT and have NO wear, NO writing and moderate spindle traces only evident when angled under a bright light
VINYL Visual: The vinyl retains its original DEEP, LIKE-NEW, GLOSSY SHEEN and is practically UNMARKED (there is a superficial light mark on "Manhattan Rumble" but this has NO audio consequence). BEAUTIFUL RECORD
VINYL Audio: SUPERB - CRYSTAL CLEAR, RICH, WARM and VERY STRONG. There are NO scratches, NO jumps/sticks, NO surface noise and NO clicks/pops. The record plays to a very, very high standard with NO groove-wear and NO distortion and must be critically graded MINT(-) for audio. NOT over-graded in ANY way as I use strict RECORD COLLECTOR grading standards (please refer to my feedback and 'about me' page)
SLEEVE: The 1st issue TEXTURED "Garrod & Lofthouse" gatefold cover (with factory sealed left side edge) is also in SUPERB, NEAR MINT condition. Beautifully CLEAN and FRESH with NO rubbing to the textured surfaces and NO wear to the edges - the spine is straight and true with all text CLEAR and BOLD. One of the finest examples I have seen of this easily worn untreated, textured sleeve
The poly-lined HARVEST company inner is also in top condition - practically AS-NEW
