1928 preach-a-fyin' !
Here's a great little snapshot of a southern church as it existed back in 1928. While may preachers could send you to sleep in no time, there was no sleeping in any service with Richard Bryant at the lectern.
While you might have seen many recordings by Rev. Gates, it seems that Bryant only recorded this pair of tracks and that might just be it. This wild pair of sermons were cut in Memphis, Tennessee on Monday, September 17, 1928. The band on the track behind them is not credited but it's very likely it's the Memphis Jug Band. There's no credit either for the gals in the amen chorus.
The selections here are "A Wild Man In Town" and "A Lie Was Told, But God Know'd It" Both have a sermon with a song at the end. Fabulous !
