Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh looking and highly attractive only a tiny few ultra fine and faint spindle marks. Indeed side two has only one. A copy hardly played and offering pristine sound.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 131 grams. A good average weight for this one.

Rarity: Fairly scarce, complete first press formats with the insert are harder to find, especially in this type of condition.

Brief Info: This was the band’s second album and is an acid-blues classic and carried on the raunchy Broughton sound that has distinct Captain Beefheart overtones. For me, this is their classic and the very peak of their creativity, the twisted ‘Psychopath’ being the highlight for me amongst some brilliant tracks. “I Can’t Help Being Different, Little Girl” pleads a disturbed Broughton. And the opening track, somewhat taboo with it’s very dark subject matter. It even has a couple of censored out bleeps that gives an even more sinister effect. A band that always gave the audience a great time at the festivals between 1970-73, along with The Pink Fairies and Hawkwind - they almost became a staple diet at these events and fans loved them. This copy includes the lyric insert, which is so often missing or trashed and a record played little with few visual blemishes and offering the best sound possible. Any collector of this cult band and the early Harvest classics, this is a must-have item and seldom will a better one be found.

Cover Grade and Format: MINT(-): but minus, WHAT MINUS?, this is a stunning example that could practically pass for new. A gatefold format with front and back laminate. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse and includes the original ‘Patent Pending’ text. The original double-sided lyric insert is included in equally superb condition.

Lamination: Front & Back: Both sides are in the most wonderful of conditions and they truly do look practically as made. Ultra clear and shiny with a freshness few could match these days. The only reason I decided against the full Mint grading, is an ultra fine and faint hairline mark on the front seen critically under angled light. This being the only minuscule blemish (if you can indeed call it that) on this 40-year-old plus cover. Just two very small hairline surface creases on the front spine edge that barely even show and that’s about. How many of these will ever show fewer than that? Even under light, barely any traces at all of friction rubs or dulling and the artwork can be enjoyed to maximum advantage with laminate this clean and unaged. ALL is fully adhered too with no lifts or blisters to marr the appearance. No pressmarks, scuffs or record impression on either sides, this is one the owner stored away and left untouched for decades – indeed, I am sure the record has not seen light-of-day since the early 70s. A cover for the serious and discerning Harvest collector, they will rarely, if ever be found better than this.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Superb and looking little short of factory-fresh. Any blemishes too tiny to be worthy of mention.

Top Edges: Both unworn and straight with full laminate retained which is very smooth to the fingertip.

Bottom Edges: The main surfaces of these resting edges were not laminated, hence more prone to wear and rubbing. These have barely any traces and are therefore exceptional.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean and sharp with any burr traces minuscule. Viewing these end-on reitterates the fact how thin the card is on this cover making the lack of wear even more worthy of note. These are guaranteed untrimmed and the record enters on the back edge.

Spine and Text: Absolutely superb: the only totally natural blemish is a faint central crease that forms when opened, in this case not many times for certain. Solid, straight and folded square, so all edges meet up perfectly together and parallel. All text is perfect under the totally uncracked and ultra clear laminate that remains ultra smooth to the fingertip with no scuffs or cracks.

Corners: Minor tip rubs to the bottom right pair, this being somewhat critical. All retain fantastic little short of as made shape and there would be few complaints if this looked like this when first purchased way back in 1970.

Cover Summary: A near reference standard all-round example of this early 1970’s cover, one that will prove nigh-on impossible to find much better. This super-fresh, shiny example should please most-all collectors and even the most discerning connoisseur collectors can consider this one.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): this early pressing includes a plain white unlined inner with the open window format. Mostly clean with any ageing from darkening light and minimal. Two super crisp window circles and all edges unsplit with no repairs. Any creasing light and mild with even the top opening showing little wear.

The Lyric Insert: MINT(-): again, barely any minus to be seen. This is very clean with very sharp edges with no creasing. This is an original, not a repro and it includes the song lyrics on both sides with some strange minimal illustrations of the songs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: for visual, but playing terms better still, but with one light surface mark on ‘Old Gopher’ that has NO sound and fine and very faint surface traces under light the excellent grading for looks is appropriate. A fine visual early copy that is clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. I am certain this has been played little and offers wonderful clean sound throughout. Visually a splendid record that should please many, if not most collectors. How many records of this type now over 40-years-old will have no minor surface blemishes if you look hard enough?

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This Harvest classic plays even above its high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. With any surface sounds barely registering and no pops or clicks noted and this is a very fine clean ‘first’ pressing that was supremely enjoyable to listen too. This, one of my favourite of the early Harvest albums and I regard this as one of the classics within it’s genre. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record and one of the less-lauded Harvest classics. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
