Brief Info: ‘Inside Out’ is the fourth Edgar Broughton Band album, always a band that gave an audience a great time at the festivals between 1970-73 - they almost became a staple diet at such events. Their Harvest albums were always interestingly packaged and this is no different. A somewhat different gimmick sleeve with moving centrefold areas. It actually is in three segments and it literally turns inside out - this is a little challenging to perform and a some thought is needed to make this happen. I enjoyed the challenge of working out how to do it, and there is some risk of damage involved, so care and practice is needed and I will leave it at that. Glad to say this has suffered no damage and it works perfectly – notice the different artwork inside the gatefold on my two open pictures – this is only achieved by performing the somewhat tricky operation. This a very fine original, both record, cover, lyric insert sheet, and even inner sleeve are impressive – the record offering very fine sound throughout with little unwanted. It will take a fair degree of beating and most collectors will enjoy it.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): arguably better. An unlaminated gatefold format with the centrefold in three split areas. A complex and clever gimmick cover that actually folds inside out (with care and practice). So the inside graphic totally changes as seen on my pictures. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse and includes the scarce lyric ‘WEE MEE NIT’ insert sheet and the Harvest promotional inner sleeve.

Cover Front: Tiny tip rubs and very gentle bottom edge burr traces simply from storage on single thickness card. Little else to fault being clean, unrubbed and barely creased at all. This a very delicate and wear-prone cover that will prove very difficult to find better.

Cover Back: Largely the same: the odd faint surface crease and minor mark, again for this, almost exceptional.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Both versions of the inside are nigh-on perfect. The sliding cut parts all work perfectly with no damage or tears.

Top Edges: There are four edges on the top, the record is stored within the back pair, which is not overly obvious. All single thickness, hence a little thickening is hard to avoid, any present is light and minor.

Bottom Edges: Three edges on the bottom, two being single thickness, a little light thickening with gentle burr traces here and there.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Two edges here – some single, some double thickness due to the ‘cut’ movement working inner strips. All mostly neat with minimal hint of wear or thickening.

Spine and Text: Format at per the opposite side with no text, these in similar conditions to above.

Corners: Small tip rubs/tiny creases with mostly very fine shape.

Cover Summary: Intricate, delicate and wear-prone, this has little to fault and will never prove easy to find better. The moving parts inside all sliding freely and easily, this should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: but the polylining has shed, this replaced by a soft replacement which is safer for the record should it be chosen as storage. A little seam adhesive toning/darkening but not much else to fault. Minimal creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs.

The Lyric Insert Sheet: EXCELLENT(++): a double-sided black and white lyric insert. One small fine corner crease with any ageing, marks or grubbiness minimal and very light indeed. No tears, this is made on thick paper and is guaranteed original. This being quite scarce in its own right.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): or better. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and very solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface trace marks few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. Visually a super record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality album plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Blue moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
