LP : Ed Kelly Ensemble ?– Music From The Black Museum

Original US-pressing from 1978 on THERESA RECORDS, TR103. Extensive liner-notes on the back. In the mid-70ies Ed Kelly played a lot with Pharoah Sanders and Michael White, e.g. on the 1974 LP “Michael White's Magic Music Company/Go With The Flow” on the IMPULSE! label. Kelly made two great recordings under his own name, both for THERESA, the latter is the 1979 “Ed Kelly & Friend” (the friend in this case is actually Pharoah Sanders, whose name for contract-reasons could not be mentioned on the cover), and the earlier one is the “...Black Museum”-LP. Although the title may suggest that the album is a live-recording: the cuts were made in the Bear West Studios, San Francisco, November 1977. The core of the recording-group is Ed Kelly's regular trio, other musicians are ft. as guest musicians. The tunes have elements of funky soul-jazz, modern hard-bop, spiritual jazz and more. Besides playing the piano Ed Kelly overdubs organ on “Yesterdays” and he adds some nice Moog-sounds on “Ring Shout Ballet”. The “Ballet” track is anyway one of the highlights, ft. Baba Duru ( known from the HEADHUNTERS/Survial Of The Fittest album and recordings with H.Hancock) on tabla, it's a fine spiritual track. “Samba” is a great funky modal latin-jazz tune. Excellent record that does not show up too often.

Condition: the record looks mint- in daylight & in normal artificial light, it looks mint-- to ex++ under a very strong halogen lamp ( one short tiny non-feelable superficial line on each side). It plays in mint- all of the time, top.

The cover shows just slight shelfwear, all seams/spine are intact with moderate rub in a few spots parts ( lettering on the spine is well-readable), front & back are fine with slightest ringwear; overall ex--/vg++.

Zustand: die LP sieht bei Tageslicht & unter einer normalen Lampe mint- aus, unter einer sehr hellen Halogenlampe sieht sie mint-- bis ex++ aus ( auf jeder Seite eine kleine dünne oberflächliche Linie). Sie spielt durchgehend in mint-, top.

Das Cover hat nur ganz leichte Lagerspuren, alle Kanten sind intakt mit leichtem Abrieb an einigen Stellen ( die Schrift auf der seitlichen Kante ist gut lesbar ), Vorder- & Rückseite sind schön erhalten mit nur leichtem Ringwear; insgesamt in ex--/vg++.

Alle Platten wurden professionell gereinigt, entweder von mir (Hannl Mikro) oder von den Vorbesitzern (Okki Nokki, Loricraft o.Ä.). Anschließend wurden sie nur wenige Male abgespielt bzw. nur einmal von mir zum Bewerten angehört (komplett oder in Ausschnitten). Optische Bewertung erfolgt in Tageslicht, in normalen Kunstlicht & unter einer sehr hellen Halogenlampe. Platten kommen mit neuer hochwertiger Innenhülle & in einer Schutzhülle. Bitte beachten: auch prof. gereinigte Platten können einige Staubpartikel haben; “eingefangen” während optischer & akkustischer Bewertung, Fotografieren oder den wenigen Abspielungen der Vorbesitzer.

Grading & Cleaning:

• all records have been cleaned on a professional record cleaning machine, either by me (Hannl Mikro) or by the pre-owners (Okki Nokki, Loricraft or the like). After cleaning the records have been played just a few times (or only once by me for playgrading)

• I playgrade each record (completely or at least in parts) on my Rega Planar 9, high-end Moving Coil cartridge by EINSTEIN/ EMT TU-3 SFL (please consider that the playback might differ a bit depending on your own equipment)

• I also visually grade cleaned records in daylight, in normal artificial light & under a strong halogen lamp

• only an unplayed record is mint, my highest grading for a used record is mint- . My basic gradings are: mint – ex – vg

• cleaned records are stored in a new pro innersleeve and they are placed in a PVC protection-sleeve

• pl. note: even pro cleaned records may have received some dust particles during visual-/play-grading, photographing or few pre-owner playbacks
