Brief Info: The third Earth and Fire album. A Dutch band that played progressive rock, they were one of the finest exponents of the art from that country. Lots of guitar and keyboards, especially the Mellotron, they can be compared favourably with the UK band Julian’s Treatment. Fronted by the female vocalist Jerney Kaagman – lyrics sung in English – this is one of their finest albums. Most collectors will know this band by the ultra rare debut on Nepentha. This album is a prog concept, obviously based on Atlantis, many consider it a prog classic. A lovely copy with superb Dutch cover, the UK version has far less impressive, different artwork. The record appears little used and sounds impressive and clean. Not a band whose albums are seen often. Not major sellers when active, now becoming far more sort-after. This should please most fans and collectors.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): a gatefold format with the front and back laminated. The inside is matt and smooth. Printed and made in The Netherlands, uncredited, includes the plain white inner sleeve.

Lamination – Front & Back: Just a tiny surface chip on the back bottom right corner stops a Mint(–) grading for this beautiful, colourful cover. This the choice Dutch-made cover and design for this prog-rock collector. The laminate both sides retain deep shine, freshness and clarity with barely any dulling, creasing or marks. The lack of lifting is a massive plus as well. Also no light fading, the artwork looks fantastic as seen.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The centrefold is not laminated, but still ultra impressive with practically nothing to fault.

Top Edges: Thin, but mostly very straight with no wear or fading. Still flush and parallel.

Bottom Edges: One or two tiny surface chips (look hard), then as above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, very sharp with barely any thickening or burring, even as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on back edge, all are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, again, quite thin, but straight with minimal compression. Also folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. No text printed on this one, the graphic fully intact under the solid clear laminate.

Corners: A small tip rub on the bottom back right, little else. Excellent shape retained with no knocks or dinks.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this colourfully attractive 1970’s cover, one that will prove immensely difficult to find better. The Dutch cover usually the choice of the purists for this album, which makes sense as the band are from The Netherlands, and the graphics are far more impressive than others. This beautiful item should please most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: a plain white soft-lined inner with two immaculate window circles and with minimal creasing. A couple of fine edge splits were repaired by myself to stop them widening in future, they hardly even register. The white paper hardly aged, the odd faint tone spot apart. This has the ‘N’ (Netherlands) prefix and is date-coded 17/73 (1973).

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): a very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and solidly pressed. A copy appearing hardly played on all the evidence with any surface trace marks few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. A couple of marks that follow the groove in manufacture do nothing on my system. Visually a super record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This prog-rock classic plays up to, and mostly even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Very well recorded with high quality female vocals, few available copies will outperform this early Dutch pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
