Up for auction is a rare one-sided E. Berliner's Gramophone Record from the 1890s--

Berliner 4258 Y - "Star Spangled Banner" as performed by The Haydn Quartette
Undated, probably between 1885-1888.

Handwritten/etched name of "Haydn Quartette" along left and right hand side of record hole.

Condition:
I have listened to the record and there are five quick skips. There is evidence of some needle digging and a ink like residue that measures about a quarter inch in diameter in the center portion area of the playing grooves.
As with most Berliner's from the 1890s, this one shows small scratches, scuffing, handling and some groove wear. There are some small indentations or what may be called 'dimples' in the grooves. Again, this is pretty common wear for these records.

I have been a collector for many years now and have carefully cleaned all of the discs to the best of my ability, however---you may choose to give it another cleaning -- as a record of this vintage may need it. Please see photos for more detail.

German-American inventor Emile Berliner invented the first circular, non-cylinder, playing discs with recorded sound in the late 1880s. These fairly flat-edged black, circular platter-like discs are more commonly known as records.
By 1895 he had financing available for the E. Berliner's Gramophone Company, which produced the discs from 1895-1899.
These historic recordings, which are now over 115-years old or near that age-- are considered extremely rare and collectible, with some being one-of-a-kind recordings due to the process in which they were primitively recorded and duplicated.
