-Artist / Group: Du-Cats

-Mini bio: Canadian garage/blues-rock/psychedelic band formed in 1958 in Port-Aux-Basques, Newfoundland, Canada. Originally known as The Orange Marmalade, The Du-Cats (named after a candybar) first performed to help raise money for victims of the 1958 Springhill Mining Disaster.

-Realizing that people would pay to hear them play, they changed their name from The Orange Marmalde to The Du-Cats  in the early 1960's and began perorming regularly in their hometown and beyond.

-They recorded the first of just two singles while touring the east coast and New England which was called Hey Woman b/w Stay Awhile on Rock It 200 in 1965. They were briefly scouted by both Motown and Smash Records and offered record deals by both. While they never recorded for either label, they did tour with the likes of Leslie Gore, Little Richard, Scotty Moore and various stars of Motown.

-Influenced by the legendary Bill Haley - who was in his late 30's and near destitute- their distrust of the music industry and homesickness brought them straight back to Newfoundland where they recorded their last single, an amazing blues rocker titled Off The Hook b/w Good Thing Going on RCA Victor Canada International 57-3375.

-The Du-Cats would perform garage rock, blues rock and even psychedelic tunes over the course of their career depending on what the audience desired. They made several local TV appearances as well as a 1968 appearance on CBC TV's Where It's At performig cover tunes by Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles, The Bee Gees, Deep Purple, The Rolling Stones and Little Richard and acting as backing band for singer Melinda Abbus.

-Their cover of the Rolling Stones, Off The Hook, this time with RCA Victor in Canada made them household names throughout Newfoundland and across the Maritimes.

-The band did a reunion as a four piece band with Lewis "Butch" Skinner (guitar), Winston Blackmore (bass), Claude Caines (lead vocals), and Art Bragg (drums) in 1995 for a gala celebration of the town's 50th anniversary at the Port-Aux-basques stadium. The Port-Aux-Basques museum now has a permanent display featuring the Du-Cats' memorabilia.

-In 2007, The Du-Cats were honoured with the Stompin' Tom Award from the East Coast Music Association (ECMA).

-In 2009, The Du-Cats were given the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Music Association Of Newfoundland and Labrador.

-Off The Hook written by Mick Jagger(Misspelled Mike on label) and Keith Richards is a mid-tempo psych/garage blues-rocker with gritty lead vocals from Claude Caines, hot guitar from Lewis "Butch" Skinner with Winston Blackmore on bass and Art Bragg on drums; classic early Newfoundland garage single.

-Good Thing Going is a fast-tempo garage rocker with terrific lead vocals from Claude Caines, strummed guitar, driving bass and drums.

-Rare single from early in the history of Newfoundland/Labrador rock & roll.

-Visual grade: VG+. Although visually a VG+ due to light surface scratches, both sides of the record play with excellent fidelity, no distortion, and while there is a bit of background noise at the lead-in, once the needle hits the grooves and the music starts, the background noise pretty much disappears.

Record grading:

(M) Mint: A mint record should appear to have just left the manufacturers without any handling; that is, it should appear perfect! No light scuffs or scratches, blotches or stains on labels or writing, tears or splits; nothing. Perfect. And age has nothing to do with it; the same standards for Mint apply to a rare rockabilly single from 1955 as they do to a Top 40 record from 1988! There are no sliding values for Mint. A Mint record cover should appear to have never had a record in it; no ring-wear, dog-eared corners, writing, seam-splits; nothing! Perfect! Even a new, unplayed old stock record can have factory flaws. Mint should be used sparingly and will usually attract a premium value to serious collectors. Mint means perfect and nothing else!

(SS) Still sealed: Still sealed in the factory shrink wrap.

(M-) Mint minus: A nearly perfect record. The record will show no obvious signs of wear, very light surface scuffs from normal handling are permitted but no light scratches. Original finish intact. Picture sleeves should have no more than the most minor defects, such as almost invisible ring wear or other signs of slight handling.

(VG+) Very good plus: The record will show some signs that it was played or otherwise handled by a previous owner who took good care of it. Record surfaces may show some slight signs of wear and may have slight scuffs or light scratches. Picture sleeves may have some slight ring wear, lightly turned up corners, or a small seam split.

(VG) Very good: Many of the defects found in a VG+ record or sleeve will be more pronounced in a VG record or picture sleeve. Groove wear may be noticeable, the record may have light scratches (deep enough to feel with a fingernail) that will affect the sound, but the foreign noises will be less prominent than the music. Picture sleeves may have quite prominent ring wear. Creases, folds, seam splits and tears will be more obvious and may appear on all three sides, and there may be writing as well.

(VG-) Very good minus: Foreign noises may be about as prominent as the music. The record still plays through without skipping. The picture sleeve will have more significant seam splits, perhaps to the point where they were taped closed, and highly obvious ring wear and heavier writing. Can serve as a filler until a better one comes along.

(G) Good: We seldom offer a good record for sale unless it is particularily rare for the following reasons: Foreign noises are louder than the recorded music and listening can be distracted by the noise. May or may not play through without skipping, but should be so noted. Picture sleeves are so badly seam split that they may not be able to contain the record within.Tears, folds, writing and ring wear may be overwheming.
