Dr. Octagonecologyst is the 1996 underground hip-hop, concept album by Dr. Octagon, an alter ego of hip-hop legend Kool Keith (Ultramagnetic MCs, Dr. Dooom, Black Elvis, Dr. Ultra). Widely regarded as one of the best and most collectable underground hip-hop albums of the ‘90s, Dr. Octagonecologyst introduces the character of Dr. Octagon, a homicidal, extraterrestrial, time-traveling gynecologist, and surgeon. Kool Keith’s abstract lyricism explores themes of medicine, space travel, and more setting it apart from mainstream hip-hop while redefining underground hip-hop.

The outrageously offbeat humor and psychedelic storytelling gives the album a cinematic quality which is perfectly complimented by complex and moody trip-hop inspired beats produced by Dan the Automator (Handsome Boy Modeling School, Gorillaz, Deltron 3030). The Boom Bap beats are further enhanced by the legendary DJ Q-Bertwhose remarkable scratching gives the album its turntablism edge.

Simply put: Hip-hop has never seen — before or since — an album like Dr. Octagonecologyst or its warped-genius creator Kool Keith aka Dr. Octagon. At a time when gangsta rap was still dominating the genre and hip-hop was about to enter its bling era, no one was prepared for an audacious concept rap album about an alien time-traveling gynecologist who travels to Earth through a fax machine.

On his debut solo album (after three albums with pioneering crew Ultramagnetic MCs), Kool Keith’s abstract, avant-garde lyricism (“Theoretically keepin' puppies and the pedigree / Small fetus brought Santa Claus to greet us”) is, as Rolling Stone notes, a “beacon of absurdist freedom.”

One of the magazine’s 200 Greatest Hip-Hop Albums of All Time, Dr. Octagonecologyst blends Dan the Automator’s fractured, celestial production with Kool Keith’s unparalleled mind. “Keith kicked psychedelic scatology, sprawling free-association and head-scratch disses like ‘Shakespeare’s gone, don’t even think about him,’” Rolling Stone wrote, “sucking you in, and pulling you under, into his twisted cosmic netherworld.”
