Description
This is Doug Sahm's 1st release (released in early March, 1955). It was also available on 78 RPM.
NOTE: You are bidding on / buying 2 (two) 45 RPM records: (1) an original 1955 FIRST pressing and (2) the 1975 SECOND pressing.
This 45 is not as rare as you might think because Charlie Fitch had copies of the original pressing available through 1990 in his store and frequently sold copies in Europe and Asia via mail. Charlie had the 45 repressed twice during his lifetime, and sometimes which pressing is being sold or auctioned is confusing. Many times, the second pressing is sold as the first pressing and vice versa. Charlie Fitch explained the pressing identifications to me personally during a visit to Luling.
First pressing: (March, 1955). There is a film (or "mist" as Charlie called it) on the vinyl that looks a bit heavy on all of the first pressings that Charlie sold. This mist is an "age film" and comes from being stored for years in Charlie's offices and the vinyl that was used in 1955. I have this in writing from Charlie on Sarg letterhead dated September 4, 1985. Charlie also thought that Sarg records were prone to this filming / misting process because of the vinyl they used, but luckily the misting did not adversely effect play and could be cleaned. All original Sarg record pressings from the 1950's have this "age film" whether they were stored at Charlie's warehouse or not.
Second Pressing: (1975). No aging film on the vinyl. The grooves are shiny and clean. However, Charlie used the original 1955 labels he still had on the second pressing so the absence of film is the key.
Third pressing: (Fall, 1989). This reissue was pressed on see through dark grey vinyl. Hold the 45 up to a light and you can actually see through it. Again, Charlie used original labels from 1955. He must have figured he'd sell a lot!
