Description

Dire Straits - Brothers In Arms

12" Vinyl LP - Complete with EX condition lyric inner

Comes with an excellent condition textured print signed by the complete Dir Straits band - including Mark Knopfler, Terry Williams, Alan Clark, Jack Sonni, Guy Fletcher, John Illsley & Chris White (saxophone)

Note that these are original signatures, not printed.  While we are not sure where the print came from, Omega Auctions had a similar although not identical one for sale see lot listed at https://www.the-saleroom.com/en-gb/auction-catalogues/omega-auctions/catalogue-id-srom10057/lot-4406112f-cc61-4574-b7fc-a50700c6f5d0 .  We assume a small number of these prints were signed by the band

Since this does not come with a certificate of authenticity I've had some questions about it's authenticity, my response is this :

We happened to find this record amongst a batch of LPs we bought in.  So are the signatures genuine?  My attitude is that if it were an autograph by Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles or bands like that whose signed stuff gets high prices there would be greater cause for suspicion.

I love Dire Straits, they've done great stuff (Money For Nothing is one of the quintessential sounds of the 80s!), but even a signed item may not make a high price, and if a forger were to take the time and trouble to fake a signature, might as well make sure it's one that'll sell well!  Plus, to find a really nice textured print, and to do the entire band, seems like the kind of attention to detail that a good forger is unlikely to give to an item that may be lucky to fetch a 3 figure sum.

I wonder how many times would someone have to practise a signature to then do it fluidly enough on the final item to make it look convincing?  Because if it were traced or written slowly I think it'd be easy to see as the lines would not be smooth, or there may be hard indentation on the paper.  I have compared the signatures to other examples online and they look good to me!  And then they'd have to do the same for all the other members of the band.  I think it'd take quite some time and practise to do this, and even if someone did do it, why bother doing Chris White's autograph?  He's not even a member of the band!  Although he did tour with them, why bother including it?  Seems like doing all the members of the band would be quite adequate for a fake!

Grading

For LPs and singles I use the Rare Record Guide grading system detailed below:

MINT The LP or single is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items are in perfect condition.

EXCELLENT The LP or single shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and/or creasing.

VERY GOOD The LP or single has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and an occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover and contents without any major defects.

GOOD The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing edges, spine splits, discoloration, etc.
