Dick Griffin (born James Richard Griffin in Jackson, Mississippi, 1939) is an American trombonist known for his work in free jazz, especially with Rahsaan Roland Kirk, the Sun Ra Arkestra, and Charles Mingus..
Trombonist Dick Griffin is best known as a sideman of Rahsaan Roland Kirk with whom he recorded several albums (Inflated Tear, Blacknuss etc.), and it was Kirk's playing that inspired him to create "multiphonics", the art of playing more than one note at once on a horn, and "circularphonics" combining multiphonics with circular breathing. Griffin also played with Charles Tolliver, McCoy Tyner, Leon Thomas or Sun Ra, to name only a few, and in 1974 he released his debut album as a leader The Eighth Wonder on Strata-East (still available on Ile Oxumaré). Now Is The Time: The Multiphonic Tribe for Trident is the follow-up released 5 years later and like many Strata-East-albums it's a mélange of diverse styles as jazz, soul (title track), latin (Madrid) or funk (Multiphonic Blues) with a spiritual dash (Peaceful Thinking). Fine effort!
