Tell the Truth b/w Roll it Over
Polydor Records 2058-057, 1970. Possible demo copy.
The formation history of Derek and the Dominos is complicated but – cutting a long story short – band members Eric Clapton, Carl Radle, Bobby Whitlock and Jim Gordon had originally worked together as part of the Delaney & Bonnie and Friends revue early in 1970. The four of them were reunited later in the same year when they came togethe as session players for the recording of George Harrison’s solo album, All Things Must Pass. It was during these sessions that the idea for Derek and the Dominos was born.
Famously, Derek and the Dominos recorded only one studio album - but that one, the double album, Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs, is of course now regarded as a rock classic.
It is sometimes forgotten however, that Derek and the Dominos recorded a single, prior to beginning work on the album – in fact, while they were still working on All Things Must Pass. As well as the band members mentioned above, the personnel on both sides of the single also included George Harrison and ex-Traffic guitarist, Dave Mason. The single was produced by Phil Spector and was recorded at the Apple Studio.
That single Tell the Truth b/w Roll it Over is the record offered for sale here. This single has become one of the great rarities of Eric Clapton’s recorded output (and of course, the recorded output of everyone else involved). This is because, almost immediately after the record was released, Eric realised that he was not happy with it and decided that it should be withdrawn from sale. It is not clear how many copies were sold but online research suggests that it was only available in record shops in the UK for a couple of days. I believe a similar thing happened with the US release of the single on the Atco label although it may have been available for slightly longer there.
So, we can be sure there are precious few copies of this single out there in the world. Discogs for example, has no copies of the British release listed currently although it does have one or two examples of the US issue.
Now, having outlined the scarcity of this single, I need to be clear that this copy is not in tip-top condition – although it is certainly a decent example, especially given the rarity of the release. The playing surfaces to both sides have a fair sprinkling of lines and marks. Neither side has any real scratches though, so there are no intrusive pops or clicks. Light background crackling is however audible in the one or two quieter passages on the B-side and in the run-in and run-out grooves. The labels to both sides are nice and clean as you can see, as is the original company sleeve.
I think – though please note I could be wrong here – that the black, over-printed star symbol on the A-side of the record, indicates that this is a promotional copy. If anyone could confirm that I would be grateful and I will add a note to this listing.
Just to complete the story, Tell the Truth was re-recorded for the Layla album, this time with Duane Allman on second guitar. The song was played at a less frenetic pace than the single. The consensus among critics tends to be that the album version is the more successful. Roll It Over was not re-recorded so only exists on vinyl on the single.
