Members of Van der Graaf Generator left singer, Peter Hammill to his own solo career aspirations and recorded this strikingly pleasant set of mostly instrumental tunes. 'The long hello' creates just the right mood for strolling art galleries on a cloudy day or perhaps a few glasses of wine before dinner. A sense of soft Canterbury jazz rock runs through these seven tracks, and is very unlike any Van der Graaf Generator albums I am aware of. Perhaps they get a bit closer to Gentle Giant toward the end of side 2 if anything. The biggest question remaining is what prevented them from finding a clever band name for this venture? Utilizing their names alone is a bit awkward and unimaginative. It's a very nice Italian-only first press. A round mark, from probably a label adorns the upper left front cover. It actually blends in nicely with the cover art, gives it some character I think. What looks like the start of some disc impression is barely present as well. Check the photos, as all this may not exist at all. The vinyl appears blemish free and may have touched a needle only a few times or less. By the time of their follow up albums in the 80's, they gratefully carried on as The Long Hello.
