David Axelrod "The Auction" Decca DL-75355, Stereo, 1972.
We've heard this one described variously as a cornerstone of hip-hop, a funk opera or a vault of classic samples. It's essentially a concept LP (please, don't scream) providing a dynamic look at the U.S. slave trade-and the breaking of that trade-during the 1800's. What makes it unique is that is was composed and arranged by David Axelrod and co-produced with Cannonball Adderley, and features jazz/funk luminaries like Ernie Watts and David T. Walker, as well as VERY powerful vocal solos and chorus work.
The LP and gatefold cover are in VG+/NM- condition - the vinyl appears mint, but early 70s Decca pressings are notorious for having a few lightly noisy spots, and this one does have a couple, though that chorus tends to drown them out with no trouble. There is a small 'sample' sticker on the back of the cover, lower left corner, and some there is some light top edge wear. The VERY RARE press kit materials are intact, in NM- shape, and features 3 pics of Axelrod. Still a real rarity, and a 'fusion' of concept and musical style that does the term proud.
