14 Too Long Beginning with the irresistible One More Time, Daft Punk's second album charges through a head-spinning array of styles and samples, creating a pop culture stew of funky loops and dance floor anthems. The influence of Jean Michel-Jarre is in there somewhere, along with the giant rock hooks of 70s rock icons like Boston and Electric Light Orchestra. There are dashes of Prince and oodles of new wave/disco, from Gary Numan which are all set off with metronomic house beats. Aerodynamic even includes a guitar interlude that somehow ends up meshing in a crazy blend of stomping basslines and hyped-up harmonies. Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger is the definitive, daft, dance floor statement spinning an intelligent groove around an ever-escalating string of computerized seduction. Everywhere on the record, gigantic beats are dropped with pinpoint precision, blending with exquisite melodies and hooks, so that ultimately this album marks a huge step forward in songwriting and production for Daft Punk and is their album work to date.
