Dusty Springfield was popular in Europe and performed at the Sanremo Music Festival. Her entries at the Sanremo festival were "Tu che ne sai" and "Di fronte all’amore" ("I Will Always Want You"). in January 1965, she took part in the San Remo song festival, appearing alongside fellow Britgirls Petula Clark, Kiki Dee, Anita Harris, as well as, Italian American singer Timi Yuro and Italian singers Iva Zanicchi and Audrey. Dusty shared a dressing room with Petula, and they found to their annoyance that the paparazzi were trying to photograph them from a window in the roof. She sang two songs at the contest. The practice at the time was to have two singers – one Italian and one international – perform each entry. Both she and Italy’s Fabrizio Ferretti sang Tu che ne sai, which made it through to the semi-finals before being eliminated. The other was Di fronte all’amore – also performed by Gianni Mascolo – which was knocked out in the first round. (Dusty also recorded an English version of the song, I will always want you.)  However, the experience wasn’t a complete washout for Dusty. While at the contest, she fell in love with a song called Io che no vivo (senza te), which had been performed both by its writer, Pino Donaggio, and by American singer Jodie Miller. Dusty took the song back home with her, and a year later her English-language version, You don’t have to say you love me, became her only UK number one single, in April 1966.  Inevitably, Dusty’s songs were also recorded by Italian stars, the best known of which are Patty Pravo’s version of I just don’t know what to do with myself, Se mi vuoi bene, and Orietta Berti’s take on Stay awhile, Scorderai. But Dusty’s biggest Italian hit came as a result of her 1987 collaboration with the Pet Shop Boys, What have I done to deserve this, which reached the Italian top ten. ‘Di Fronte All’Amore’ is one of two songs that Dusty sang at the San Remo Song Festival in 1965 (the other was ‘Tu Che Ne Sai’); it was also sung in the contest by Gianni Mascolo. Originally the song was scheduled to be performed by Vic Damone, with Dionne Warwick substituting. But at the end of the day, it fell to Dusty to perform it. Not only did she record the song in Italian, but she later recorded an English language version too (I Will Always Want You). Dusty recorded the English version of ‘Di Fronte All’Amore’ the following year (1966), this time with an arrangement by Wally Stott. She gives an even more dramatic performance on this song than on ‘You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me’ and sounds emotionally drained by the time she reaches the end. In fact, on an alternate take of the song, she stops just before the end and gives a resigned giggle. The final recording comprised two takes edited together and even then it was a bit of a struggle sustaining the last note. She sounds fractionally off and this may well have been the reason the recording didn’t surface at the time. But it makes not a jot of difference to a truly staggering performance. Dusty was one of the greatest voices of Northern Soul.  We miss her so much.

Mary Isabel Catherine Bernadette O'Brien OBE (16 April 1939 – 2 March 1999), known as Dusty Springfield, was a singer. Of all the female British pop artists of the 1960s, she made one of the biggest impressions on the American market. Owing to her distinctive sensual sound, she was one of the most notable white soul artists. Born to an Irish Roman Catholic family that loved music, Mary O'Brien learned to sing at home. Springfield began her solo career in 1963 with the upbeat pop hit, "I Only Want To Be With You". Her following hits among many others included "I Just Don't Know What to Do with Myself", "Wishin' and Hopin'" and "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me". A fan of American pop music, she campaigned to bring the little-known soul singers to a wider British audience by devising and hosting the first British performances of the top-selling Motown Records artists in 1965. Her rendition of "The Look of Love", written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David, was included on the soundtrack of the James Bond movie Casino Royale (1967) and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Song in 1967. The marked changes of pop music in the mid-1960s left many female pop singers out of fashion. To boost her credibility as a soul artist, Springfield went to Memphis, Tennessee, to record an album of pop and soul music with the Atlantic Records main production team. Dusty in Memphis earned Springfield a nomination for the Grammy Award and it received the Grammy Hall of Fame award. International polls list the album among the greatest of all time. Its standout track "Son of a Preacher Man" was an international Top 10 hit in 1969. Subsequently, Springfield's success dipped for eighteen years. Collaborations with the Pet Shop Boys returned her to the Top 20 of the British and American charts with "What Have I Done to Deserve This?", "Nothing Has Been Proved" and "In Private". In 1995, Ms. Springfield was diagnosed with breast cancer which eventually caused her death in 1999. Springfield was voted the Top British Female Artist in the New Musical Express reader's polls in 1964, 1965 and 1968. Interest in Springfield's early output was revived in 1994, due to the inclusion of "Son of a Preacher Man" on the soundtrack of the movie, Pulp Fiction. She is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the U.K. Music Hall of Fame. International polls have named Springfield among the best female rock artists of all time.
