Released in the glow of post-punk fervor in late-'70s Manchester, one would think Return would consist of loud, aggressive music, but that's not the way Vini Reilly works.
With heavy involvement from producer Martin Hannett, who created all the synth pieces on the record as well as producing it, Reilly on Return made a quietly stunning debut, as influential down the road as his labelmates in Joy Division's effort with Unknown Pleasures.
Eschewing formal "rock" composition and delivery -- the album was entirely instrumental, favoring delicacy and understated invention instead of singalong brashness -- Reilly made his mark as the most unique, distinct guitarist from Britain since Bert Jantsch.
Embracing electric guitar's possibilities rather than acoustic's, Reilly fused a variety of traditions effortlessly -- that one song was called "Jazz" could be called a giveaway, but the free-flowing shimmers and moods always revolve around central melodies. "Conduct," with its just apparent enough key hook surrounded by interwoven, competing lines, is a standout, turning halfway through into a downright anthemic full-band rise while never being overbearing.
Hannett's production gave his compositions a just-mysterious-enough sheen, with Reilly's touches on everything from surfy reverb to soft chiming turned at once alien and still warm.
Consider the relentless rhythm box pulse on "Requiem for a Father," as Reilly's filigrees and softly spiraling arpeggios unfold in the mix -- but equally appealing is "Sketch for Winter," Reilly's guitar and nothing more, a softly haunting piece living up to its name.
MATRIX: FACT 14 A2 (stamped "TOWN HOUSE") / FACT 14 B2 (stamped "TOWN HOUSE")
THE LP IS HOUSED IN THE ORIGINAL TEXTURED, BLACK SINGLE SLEEVE PRINTED BY GARROD & LOFTHOUSE WHO ARE MERELY CREDITED AS "G&L" ON THE BACK OF THE COVER
Track Listing:
Side 1: Sketch for Summer / Requiem for a Father / Katharine / Conduct
Side 2: Beginning / Jazz / Sketch for Winter / Collette / In 'D' / Sketch for Winter (version with less reverb and more phasing) (not listed on the label)
LABELS: CLEAN and BRIGHT with NO wear, NO writing and barely any spindle traces. THIS RECORD HAS SEEN VERY LITTLE PLAY
VINYL Visual: The vinyl has a DEEP, LIKE-NEW, GLOSSY SHEEN and is practically UNMARKED
VINYL Audio: OUTSTANDING audio delivery - CRYSTAL CLEAR, SHARP, RICH and VERY STRONG. TREMENDOUS LOUD CUT ON THIS PRESSING. There are NO scratches, NO jumps, NO sticks, and barely any clicks/pops (very light and background only and never intrusive) which is VERY rare for this LP which has many delicate, quiet passages commonly spoilt by excessive surface noise and clicking. The sound quality here is SENSATIONAL and the LP plays to a very high standard with NO groove-wear and NO distortion (its hardly been played). Must be graded EXCELLENT+ for audio. NOT over-graded in ANY way as I use STRICT RECORD COLLECTOR grading standards (please refer to my feedback and 'about me' page)
SLEEVE: BEAUTIFUL, NEAR MINT condition. Being textured, predominantly black and untreated in nature the surfaces of this sleeve are normally found with excessive rubbing and ring wear but this is a SUPERB example. It has been kept inside a protective sleeve all its life, so has an almost AS-NEW appearance with NO surface rubbing and NO wear to the edges or spine - where all the gold text is CLEAR and BOLD. BEAUTIFUL, EXTREMELY WELL PRESERVED COVER
PLEASE HAVE A LOOK AT MY PICTURES - I USUALLY TAKE QUITE A FEW SO YOU CAN GET A CLEAR INDICATION OF EVERY DETAIL OF THE ITEM
I HAVE UPLOADED AS MANY PICTURES AS I CAN BUT I WOULD BE MORE THAN HAPPY TO SUPPLY ANY ADDITIONAL PHOTOS ON REQUEST
THIS REALLY IS A BEAUTIFUL COPY OF VINI REILLY'S IMPRESSIVE DEBUT AND I THINK A FINER COPY WOULD BE VERY HARD TO LOCATE INDEED
AS WITH ALL MY RECORDS THIS HAS A LOW START PRICE AND NO RESERVE
PLEASE CHECK OUT MY OTHER AUCTIONS FOR MORE RARE AND COLLECTABLE VINYL
