Here, you get what you pay for – SAFE PACKING in BOXES using 7mm DOUBLE-WALL STIFFENERS including full side protection and bubble wrap, the records removed from the covers of course. All this very safe packing means I lose money on every box I post, but safe delivery is, and will always be paramount. You WILL see the difference when my packet arrives. Also, I will pay for insurance on any record that sells for over £100 at NO extra cost – that is UK and abroad. Also I aim to post the very same day after payment is received if possible. Label/Format: Nepentha with matt, quite smooth surfaces. Another of the prized and beautiful progressive labels designed by the graphic artist Roger Dean.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only quite light and fine spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. This fragile album plays fine.

Rarity: Quite rare, like most albums on this very short-lived ‘progressive’ label (an off-shoot of Philips), it sold poorly and went largely unnoticed before being deleted. The similar related Vertigo Spiral albums of the era largely suffered the same fate.

Brief Info: A one-off album by the folk-rock band Dulcimer. A lovely quite ethereal and delicate acoustic album on one of rock’s most collectable and sort-after labels Nepentha. Other music was recorded by the band but was not issued at this time. Beautifully recorded and packaged, but largely ignored and now very sort-after by folk connoisseurs and collectors. This a fine example, the record with only fine and faint surface marks. Being a fairly quiet album, certainly in places, it does have the odd sporadic light click here-and-there – finding one of these with nothing unwanted will always prove immensely difficult – and overall this one plays well with just the occasional reminder its a vintage vinyl record being played. The cover is equally uncompromising and prone to all forms of wear, shame it was not laminated. Again, this is a very nice example as-seen. Not an album (or even label) that surfaces often and a scarce opportunity.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: or close to. An unlaminated matt gatefold format. Printed and made in England, includes the Phonogram polylined inner sleeve.

Cover Front & Back: The beautiful graphic has minimal traces of rubbing, and few will show much less these days. This one of those covers that tends to show a green hue when rubbed like Gentle Giant’s ‘Octopus’ and The Kink’s Muswell Hillbillies’ (two that immediately spring to mind that are similar in that respect), and this has traces of that near the edges. But the main areas either side have little at all and look impressive. Clean and still quite fresh with minimal creasing – just a few on the spine edges – and mild rubbing on the corner tips. No sticker issues and the lack of fading, and especially avoiding ugly ring wear is a massive plus on this unforgiving cover.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Little to fault inside as-seen.

Top Edges: Straight, flush and flat with only light very patchy rubbing.

Bottom Edges: More consistent moderate rubbing on vulnerable storage edges.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The front has a real tucked and folded uncut edge that shows little wear. The back storage edges have little thickening and remain generally neat, especially the inner one that is very sharp.

Spine and Text: An impressive spine overall, any small rubs mostly confined to the very ends. Solid, straight with hardly any compression and folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. The delicate orange text still fully present and practically unworn.

Corners: Moderate, but quite small tip rubs with generally neat very fine shape retained with no knocks.

Cover Summary: Most will know how badly many Vertigo Spiral album covers wear, and this one was manufactured by the same company and style as those. Indeed, the back has the same style VO boxed price code as those did. A strong all-round example of this uncompromising and very wear-prone early 1970’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. This quite rare, still very attractive item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(–): a Phonogram style inner with two neat window circles and fresh still reasonably clear polylining. The white paper reasonably lightly discoloured to politely remind of age, but avoiding creasing, any crinkle gentle and very light. One tiny edge surface split hardly even registers. This is date-coded 0171 (January 1971).

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(–): arguably better. A fine visual copy that is clean with fine shine and very solidly pressed. A copy with few plays on all the evidence with any surface marks very light, mostly very wispy and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, hardly anything even registers. Visually a super record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This ‘lost’ ‘progressive’ folk album plays mostly above it’s high visual grading with little to fault, but does a few sporadic, light clicks here-and-there to politely remind of what is being played. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and generally a clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises or distortion. Few available copies will outperform this significantly I feel sure. With gentle acoustic music, the odd contact sound or blemish is massively difficult to avoid completely. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played quite lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled within a non-smoking environment. Little of any major note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this lovely record, my first one of these in ages. It could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be highly recommended, but not if the odd very occasonal contact sound is an issue.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new Nessie Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
