Rarity: Scarce as an original: this was a very late 1971 album on this label, hence the final copies often had the new Kinney sticker on the cover prior to it being reprinted. This one has it as seen on my back cover picture. This album only available for around six months on the prized Plum format and seldom seen.

Brief Info: Backed by a host of top quality musicians that include Eric Clapton, Graham Bond and Bobby Keys with Mick Jagger, Doris Troy and P.P. Arnold on vocals, this was Dr. John’s fourth album and one of his best. Here known as ‘The Night Tripper’, this is a dark and brooding set that blends blues, pop and jazz. This a beautifully packaged set and here in superb condition. The delicate cover with minimal wear, and the record hardly even played with superb sound. It even includes the scarce the spooky lyric/graphic insert sheet that I have never seen before. Fans of this very original artist, this is unmissable.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): an unlaminated gatefold format with matt and textured surfaces. This is made with quite soft card, hence such a little-worn copy is rarely seen. Printed and made in England by MacNeill Press and includes the superb lyric/graphic insert sheet. Also the late 1971 Polydor inner sleeve is here too.

Cover Front: Stunning and quite beautiful artwork is seen to maximum advantage on a barely worn or aged front. This has been cover-protected for most of it’s time and a better example will prove immensely difficult to locate. Clean and ultra fresh with superb colour and no rubbing, creasing, scuffs or sticker marks. A real work-of-art that sets THE standard.

Cover Back: The back is nigh-on identical, the lack of ring wear to say the least, is unusual, and what a difference that makes to this wonderful piece. As seen on my picture, this has the new Kinney K40250 sticker near the bottom central area. By now the transition was almost complete, but all elements of this album are the pure original ‘Plum’ first issue.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Put simply: immaculate as made – little else to add.

Top Edges: Just the odd tiny surface chip, little else and barely worn and still very straight.

Bottom Edges: Quite light rubbing in places.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, ultra sharp with barely any wear. The avoidance of thickening and burring because it has been cover-protected for most of its time. Record enters on the back edge, both guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal compression and folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. A little rubbing to the very ends is the bare minimum to expect from such a soft card cover. All text is practically unworn, and even the folds show little wear.

Corners: All retain fine shape with only quite light tip rubs.

Cover Summary: Covers of this type rarely get seen better than this – ‘The Night Tripper’ himself would be proud to own this beauty. This gorgeous item should please most-all collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): the Polydor polylined inner has aged little with two immaculate window circles and ultra clear lining. Hardly any creasing and any discolouration only very light around the adhesive areas of the seams that all remains unsplit with no repairs. This date-coded 1271 (December 1971) and would be one of the latest pre-Kinny inners on a Plum issued album.

The Lyric/Graphic Insert: PRACTICALLY MINT: one side lyrics, the other the spooky ‘Night Tripper’, this looks amazing as I hope my picture shows. Not seen this before, and for sure, I will not find a better one. Put simply again, this looks practically as made, and not even sure if the owner even knew it was inside.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT(–): arguably even better, this is as close as full Mint as I would put on a record that has been played – my mandatory sound-check being only it’s second. A supreme visual copy that is ultra clean, shiny, fresh, intense black and solidly pressed. A copy barely even run-in in vinyl terms with any surface traces minuscule, even as seen critically under bright angled light. Visually a beautiful, and very late final press Plum record that should please all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality Dr John album plays even above it’s high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely even registered and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will match, let alone outperform this rare Plum pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, clearly expertly stored and very carefully handled within a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove immensely difficult to find better and merits my highest possible recommendation.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
