The second Downliners Sect album has always confused the uninitiated because of its title. At the insistence of their producer, Mike Collier, the band plays some country music such as "Ballad of the Hounds" and "Wolverton Mountain," but also branches into folkier sounds on "Hard Travellin'" (done in country style, but known best in the early '60s as a folk standard) and even brushes up against protest music on "Little Play Soldiers," but the big surprise comes with gospel numbers like "Wait for the Light to Shine" and "Waiting in Heaven." The group's primitive nature comes through loud and clear on the loud Bo Diddley-based backbeat on "I Got Mine" and most of the rest here, which not only makes a lot of it work really well but generally turns this album into yet another brilliant outing for the band, if not quite the same as the first album. Oh, and then the country blues here -- represented by the scintillating five-minute-long "Rock in My Bed" -- is pretty intense, especially for five white English guys, and shows some blues chops that weren't on the debut album.
(REVIEW REPRINTED COURTESY OF BRUCE EDER, ALL MUSIC GUIDE /ALLMUSIC.COM/)
Of all the British R&B bands to follow the Rolling Stones' footsteps, the Downliners Sect were arguably the rawest. The Sect didn't as much interpret the sound of Chess Records as attack it, with a finesse that made the Pretty Things seem positively suave in comparison. Long on crude energy and hoarse vocals, but short on originality and songwriting talent, the Sect never had a British hit, although they had some sizable singles in other European countries. Despite their lack of commercial success or appeal, they managed to record three albums and various EPs and singles between 1963 and 1966, with detours into country-rock and an EP of death rock tunes. Although they recorded afterwards, it is the Sect's early work that continues to attract connoisseurs of '60s garage and punk.

· CONDITION:
· RECORD
(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)
(a) WE GRADE THE VINYL AS NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs - are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible, and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.
(b) The record comes in the original “Made in England” poly-lined stock inner sleeve.
(c) The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!
(d) Stereo copies of this album are not known to exist
(e) Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
· COVER (THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, LAMINATED, GLOSSY COVER):
THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).
The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:
- The laminated cover has a slight loss (flaking) of lamination along the spine (this is a common problem with most laminated 50’s and 60’s covers; lamination is just beginning to peel-off along the opening edge; however, since the underlying layer of the cover is ALSO laminated, the peeled-off spots are only a minor visual distraction
- Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the seams
- Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging (nothing significant)
- Cover has a small quality control (inspection) stamp on the back panel
- Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2.
NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:
- No split seams
- No cut-out (drill) holes.
- No cut-out corners
- No saw-marks or indents
- No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)
- No writing
- No stamps
- No tearing: no chips, dents or nicks on the seams
- No stains
- No mold or mildew spots
- No stickers or labels
- No water damage
- No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or cuts.
