Doves : Lost Souls A1/B1/A1/B1 1st Press 2000 Limited Edition

This limited edition first press plays with STUNNING quality across all four sides.  The clarity and depth of the audio is phenomenal and the only intrusion is one light click on S2.  I cannot stress enough just how clean and precise the audio is and you would not be disappointed if you had just purchased this record 'as new' yesterday that's how good it is!  As always I played every track in full and the vinyls are also visually stunning with no marks or scratches etc.  This is an album that has hardly been played that much is obvious but not only that it has been preserved beautifully.

The gatefold is in superb condition with no obvious wear and has more than likely been kept inside a pvc sleeve all its life.  A STUNNING cover!

Visual description

The vinyls are in beautiful condition and still have an immaculate jet-black glossy sheen with no marks or scratches. They have that unplayed look and I can only find a small number of barely visible sleeve removal hairlines.  In essence they still look 'shop fresh' I cannot pay them any higher compliment.  Based on the audio and that there is very little spindle wear it is safe to assume they have hardly been played.  Stunning!

Play grading

'Firesuite' begins S1 with stunning audio throughout.  It basically sounds like it has never been played before as there is no interference at all not even a dust tick.  A Mint start to the album.

'Here It Comes' is equally as strong with no 'background'.  it plays with exceptional power and depth and the clarity is outstanding.  An example of this is on the piano end section which plays to perfection.  Mint

The acoustic intro on 'Break Me Gently' is 'as new' and it continues in the same precise way with a sonic quality that cannot be faulted.  Already it is patently obvious that this album has hardly been played and I cannot emphasise enough just how pristine the audio is.  From start to finish this is Mint without a doubt.

S2 begins with a perfect rendition of 'Sea Song' a classic track.  No ticks, clicks, pops or static just pure unadulterated Mint audio from the first note to the last.  A 'busy' largely acoustic track and yet the playback is so clean and fresh sounding, it is absolutely STUNNING!

'Rise' has one light static click on the intro and then plays with perfect clarity with no other intrusion.  I will grade the intro as Ex+ and then Mint for the remainder.

'Lost Souls' ends the side with sublime quality throughout.  Every section is 'as new' and Mint is an easy grade to give.

'Melody Calls' has just a minor touch of light static for the first 4/5 seconds and then plays without fault and...no interference.  Mint- is a fair assessment of the audio.

'Catch The Sun' again plays with imperious quality with no 'background' of any kind.  The power and resonance of the audio is so impressive and there is no distortion on the top end.  As good as the day when it was first released.  Mint

The acoustic intro on 'The Man Who Told Everything' plays beautifully and it continues in the same way with STUNNING clarity, depth and warmth.  'As new' is again a correct description - each note is so clean and sharp and this truly is the definitive version of this noughties classic!  Wow!  Mint

The intro on 'The Cedar Room' is so close to perfect aside from a couple of very light ticks and as the percussion comes in the playback is phenomenal.  So deep and with such resonance also.  This high end standard is kept up as the track progresses and there are quite simply no negatives.  Mint from beginning to end.

'Reprise' plays with stunning precision from the get go.  The quiet build up intro has no 'background' and again its the clarity that really stands out as it such a quiet track.  A faultless Mint version.

The final track 'A House' ends the album on a high with, of course, sonic quality of the highest calibre.  With not so much as a dust tick it could not play any better and Mint is infinitely deserved.

In summary this genuine first press plays with a clarity, depth and power that is 'high end' to say the least and is unquestionably a FINAL UPGRADE album.  Yes there is one light click on S2 but this is vinyl and you could easily find that on a vinyl pressed yesterday let alone over 22 years ago, hard to believe it is that age.  This is the 'cleanest' version you are ever likely to find and as detailed below the gatefold is just as impressive.

The Gatefold

The cover is in fantastic condition and has clearly hardly ever been handled.  In fact it still has that 'fresh' recently bought look and has retained its original shape and structure perfectly.  The edges and wide spine have no shelf wear and there are only a couple of tiny corner 'rubs' that hardly deserve a mention they are so minor.  The opening edges have no handling wear either.  The front and back cover are pristine and the inside is also in immaculate order.  I am sure many would grade this stunning cover as Mint but I will say Mint- just to err on the side of caution.

The vinyls are housed inside generic plain white poly-lined inners which are both in perfect condition.

Play tested on my Rega P2 Turntable / Denon PMA-520AE Amp / B&W 684 Speakers

The records have been cleaned on a Pro-Ject VC-S machine
