Label Conditions: Both in impressive conditions being fresh, clean and attractive, only a couple or three light spindle marks which for a mono record is always the best news. Just a tiny surface chip on side one as seen near the rim.

Cat Number: NPL 18181.

Mode / Speed: Mono / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 161 grams. A typical heavyweight Pye pressing from this era of quality.

Rarity: Scarce: most monos are seen on the deep magenta label, and so often in trashed heavily played conditions. This still early late 1960s copy appears hardly played and offers superb looks and sound.

Brief Info: This was Donovan Leitch’s third album and regarded by many as his very best. Issued in the ‘Summer of Love’, this is one of his most sort-after titles and seldom seen in mono this clean. A wonderful set with two of his classics included in the title song and the evergreen ‘Season of the Witch’. Release was delayed in the UK until the summer of 1967 for contractual reasons, then with some different tracks to the US version that was issues in 1966. An album with more backing than previously and even including a certain Jimmy Page on guitar in pre-Led Zeppelin days. Not seen this one many times and I think this being my first on the blue label in mono. A lovely all-round example that fans of this brilliant Scottish singer-songwriter will treasure.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): a single format with laminated front. This wraps around the closed edges on to three external rear flipbacks. The back panel being matt and smooth, the spine ends are deeply pinched. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd and including the ‘Patents pending’ text. This is a dedicated mono cover with the NPL prefix. The heavy-duty polylined inner sleeve is also included.

Lamination & Front: A beautiful cover front with little to fault. The laminate retains excellent shine, freshness and clarity with no lifting and barely any creasing. Minimal marks or dulling, even seen under angled light, even the exposed strip on the right opening is clean without grubbiness. A tiny tone spot on the bottom left corner tip is close to nit-picking small. The graphic looks fabulous as seen in close-up.

Cover Back: The main back panel is lovely and shows little wear. Any blemishes gentle and light as seen critically under light up close, but few will better this. One that has survived with no ringwear, that almost remarkable with a very thick heavy record inside for around 45 years (or more). All three flipbacks are very sound and neat with no lifting or damage. Even the ends are clean with no burring or grubbiness. The odd gentle toning trace and minor laminate surface crease. Both front and back will prove immensely difficult to find better.

Top Edge: Straight, clean, smooth and unworn.

Bottom Edge: Largely the same again.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with little wear. Any thickening or burring minimal and light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: The spine is very impressive as well. Solid, straight with minimal compression, all text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate, also very well centred for good measure. The ends are deeply pinched in manufacture, and these quite fragile areas are still neat and crisp.

Corners: Minimal traces of tip wear with very fine to excellent shape retained with no dinks or knocks.

Cover Summary: A highly fresh and pleasing 1967 cover that will prove very hard to find much better. It should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): in terms of wear, hardly any. Just mildly darkened to give that reassuring hint of age of which I personally like. This is a typical Pye heavy-duty polylined inner. It has two immaculate window circles, very clear lining, minimal creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs. A little natural crinkle only. This is UK patented with ‘Foreign Patents Pending’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): with any surface marks or blemishes minimal, very few and faint as seen with scrutiny under bright angled light. A super mono record that appears very little used, and certainly not abused. Two very clean playing surfaces with lovely shine and heavily pressed. Somewhat unusual to find early Donovan monos this little played, this should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality album plays even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Total silence being almost unrealistic on more delicate records and how many mono copies these days will ever be truly pristine perfect, especially when played on such revealing stereo equipment for which these were not really designed. Few copies will outperform this still early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this impressive psych-era record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Blue moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
