EVERYTHING IS EVERYTHING SD 33-332 - 1970 debut by soul singer Donny Hathaway. Everything Is Everything features the standard socially conscious cuts including "Tryin' Times," but the real deal, actually, is in the covers — Ray Charles' "I Believe To My Soul" and Nina Simone's "To Be Young, Gifted And Black."

DONNY HATHAWAY LIVE - SD 33-386 - Donny Hathaway had one of the strongest voices in soul, both in mere vocal prowess and in his lyrical abilities. "The Ghetto", one of his most beloved songs, is on par with Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" (incidentally also a famous cover by Hathaway, as featured on this Live album) or Curtis Mayfield's "Move On Up."

Live from 1972 cemented Hathaway's reputation as one of the forerunners of soul, giving wonderful Jazzed-up interpretations (two of them running over the 10-minute mark) of classics. Hathaway plays with the audiences of the Troubadour in Hollywood and the Bitter End in New York like a preacher from the pulpit; their call-and-response is one of the elements that makes this album a classic of epic proportions.

DONNY HATHAWAY - SELF TITLED SD-33-360 - Originally released in 1971, the second album from Donny Hathaway, following 1970's Everything Is Everything. Exact reproduction, manufactured by Rhino. "Hathaway was one of the brightest new voices in soul music at the dawn of the '70s, possessed of a smooth, gospel-inflected romantic croon that was also at home on fiery protest material. Hathaway achieved his greatest commercial success as Roberta Flack's duet partner of choice, but sadly he's equally remembered for the tragic circumstances of his death — an apparent suicide at age 33."

Donny had been doing the rounds for years as background vocals and session player, and had even worked for a while with Curtis Mayfield. His first two albums, released in the early 70s, 'Everything Is Everything' and 'Donny Hathaway' where Donny seemed to be finding his own style & groove.

For his third album EXTENSION OF A MAN, Donny really puts all the pieces together, beautifully arranged melodies with a real powerful voice. Donny Hathaway had a wit & character all of his own which shines through here. Donny Hathaway was the quintessential artist. Few people can write such powerful songs, and few people can sing with such a quiet passion (Glenn Jones and Kenny Lattimore come to mind), but no one could combine those like Donny. This is the pinacle of his genius.

From the opening strings of "I Love The Lord; He Heard My Cry, Pts. 1 & 2" Donny breaks all pre-conceived notions of a soul artist by composing and arranging a classical piece. Things kick off with a mind blowing orchestral number, that glides effortlessly into the eternal 'Someday We'll All Be Free'. The eccentric cover of 'Magdalena' is also hitting, as is the rest of the material. 'I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know' is a deep, deep song.

Unfortunately nobody knew the turmoil that was going on inside Donny’s mind - he was obviously a tortured soul and badly in need of something he couldn't find. He took his own life not long after this album just when he was on the break of making it big and joining the illustrious names of the 70s. - A sad end to a young prodigy who was obviously going to go along way.
