Listening to the music again, even as I write, it has a freshness that is still stunning in its simplicity and power, a power that comes not only from the exquisite playing of Ian Carr on flugelhorn and trumpet, or Don Rendell’s tough tenor and soprano sax excursions, or even Dave Green’s constant bass, with the now legendary Michael Garrick on piano, and not least Trevor Tomkins’ ever changing drum patterns — all of which are of the highest standard — but equally from the thought that has gone into the writing and the meticulous arrangements, where the dynamics of each instrument, and the blend of those instruments, brought an insight to small ensemble jazz playing that had not been really been a part of the scene since that first Miles Davis group of the 1950s with John Coltrane.

Two of four LPs, Shades of Blue and Dusk Fire, come from 1965 and 1966, with Phase III, and Live, from 1968 and 1969, with, for me, Dusk Fire and Phase III the most evocative of that era in British jazz: of the chemistry that existed between the players, and the originality of the compositions and arrangements (mostly by Carr and Rendell) themselves, that make these recordings one of those important stepping-stones in the history of jazz, in the history of music itself. The absolute rarity of this album is not to be underestimated. It hardly ever surfaces nowadays. This is an absolutely gorgeous slab of early quality experimental jazz which is in great EX++ condition!! This has a lovely deep glossy sheen!! Hauntingly beautiful songcraft!!! Immense quality album that ticks all the right boxes and incredibly hard to find. I have twenty five years experience in grading. It doesn't get much better than this!

BACK IN 1968 WHEN THIS LP WAS FIRST RELEASED, IT ONLY EVER SOLD IN ABSOLUTELY TINY AMOUNTS , EVEN THOUGH IT WAS ISSUED ON A MAJOR LABEL- AS A RESULT IT IS SERIOUSLY RARE AND INCREDIBLY HARD TO LOCATE TODAY!!!!

 Sensational sound quality, I have played this through in its entirety and it was a great joy!!! NO skips or jumps. NO clicks or crackle, this is really a stunning heavy glossy jet black vinyl .The audio is impeccable. Inspected under an intense lightsource and angled.

Vinyl: EX++.  A great heavy glossy vinyl!!! I have played this in FULL twice over> The replay is ASTOUNDING!!! I first played for a general listen and a second time for a more detailed observation on my Linn Sondek/Rotel and B&W set up, and it was a real joy with impeccable audio. Barely played without any hairlines or marks. Fantastic songcraft!! A personal favourite of mine and I am very glad to be able to report that this is a fine slab of vinyl without any problems at all and as such worthy of inclusion of any great psych folk collection. This has the "KT" tax code embossed on the label. It is a real hard one to find, totally obscure and is barely ever found at all.  Of course NO jumps/clicks/skips etc.

Sleeve: EX.  A very thin matt sleeve that is very vulnerable indeed, it will deteriorate by just even looking at it. Three flipbacks to the rear. This one is a great example without any smudges and no writing. One tiny small thumb crease near the opening but barely visible. NO edge wear, the spine is 100%, the opening is super crisp. Straight edges, no splits, no tears etc. no writing. It will be impossible to better this one, it is an absolute upgrade copy. Pictures are part of the description.
