Dusk Fire…Heralded by many as possibly the best 60’s British modal Jazz LP! Dusk fire is solid from A to B there are no ‘filler’ tracks on this LP. I am selling this LP only because it is my second copy. Dusk fire (1966) is the first of the Quintets releases to feature Michael Garrick who brings an additional dimension to the sound, which cannot be found on their first recording (Shades of Blue). It’s very difficult to pick holes in any of the quintets output (spanning over seven years), they are all supreme recordings, however it could be argued that Dusk Fire is the best all rounder. On a personal note Dusk Fire is an LP that I have returned to time and time again, it has never failed to bring absolute joy to these ears, the interplay between Rendell & Carr is telepathic magic. The quintet are superbly tight throughout this recording featuring: Don Rendell’s simply magnificent playing of reeds and woodwinds, Ian Carr’s sweet blowing on trumpet and flugel horn. The young Michael Garrick’s stunning treatment of the piano, Dave Green’s heartbeat bass perfection and Trevor Tomkins’s, faultless drumming go together to frame the sound and form the foundation for a truly stunning LP. Dusk Fire comprises of seven tracks of sheer brilliance, not only from the outstanding instrumental prowess of the quintet’s members, but the deep empathy they share in the moving and emotional compositions. All of the tracks on this LP were written by: Rendell, Carr or Garrick, (or an amalgam of the three), -This LP deserves the adulation it has received over the years and is exceptionally rare and highly desirable. CONDITION:

A note on grading I use the Record Collector grading system with the addition of a (+) or a (-) to denote a slight increase or decrease in condition. Items described with an aural grade have been carefully played on a Thorens TD-124 MKII with an SME 3012 Tonearm and Ortofon SPU moving Coil Cartridge.

Record:
The surfaces feature a full lustre under direct angled light. The disk is flat with no warp or buckle of any kind. Side one features very light paper scuffs only and one long hairline which can not be ‘felt’ or heard during playback (Please listen to the above recording taken from the actual disk for sale). Side two again features very light paper scuffs that do not sound. The Black / Silver Columbia labels show very light signs of use to the spindle hole only. There is no writing, rips, stickers or other detractors. Condition grade visually = VG+ Aurally = EX (Excellent ) I have listened through both sides keenly having cleaned this record and feel confident with a combined visual and aural grade of EX…Please take the time to study the images above and listen to the sound clips which I hope illustrate the condition of this record far better than wordy descriptions

Cover:

The front laminated flip back Garod and Lofthouse cover has retained it’s original colour, the edges / seams are arrow straight and the corners sharp and true. The spine is fully legible and the opening edge is sharp and un feathered. Laminate wrinkle / crease bottom left and further wrinkle to 3 of the front slick sides. Small area of laminate marking at the top in the area of the title, specifically in the FIR area of the text. The unlaminated back cover still retains much of it’s original whiteness with only slight yellowing and very light discolouration top left.. The flip backs are complete and secure with a scuff middle bottom.. No, writing, stickers, rips, seam splits or tears. Condition Grade = EX- (Excellent Minus) Please take the time to study the images above for a clear view of condition
