THE FIRST SIDE AND TWO THIRDS OF THE SECOND SIDE ARE TAKEN UP WITH ONE LONG CONTINUOUS PIANO IMPROVISATION WHICH IS INCREDIBLE - THE LAST PART OF THE ALBUM IS A SHORTER IMPROVISED SOLO FLUTE PIECE (which is equally remarkable)

Ancient Africa is one long continuous solo piano piece recorded live June 1972 at the Jazz-hus Montmartre, Copenhagen and features Abdullah Ibrahim (or Dollar Brand as he was know back then) playing some remarkable music that is reminiscent of (but historically precedes) Keith Jarrett's famous Köln concert.
He combines the sophistication of advanced improvised jazz with the beautiful and often-spiritual melodies of African folk music.
An absolutely superb piece of work, beautifully recorded and very highly recommended indeed
