Description

                                 Django Reinhardt - "Djangologie/USA, Vols. 1-7"

Release Date:  Jun 1988

Recording Date:  Mar 15, 1928 - Oct 1, 1940

Label:  Swing

Type:  Compilation

Genre:  Jazz

Style:  Swing  Continental Jazz  Gypsy  South/Eastern European Traditions

This seven-LP box set, made available domestically by DRG, mostly features the remarkable guitarist Django Reinhardt with the Quintet of the Hot Club of France during 1936-1939, showing that not only could Europeans play swinging jazz as far back as the 1930s but they could be pacesetters and innovators too. Violinist Stephane Grappelli also stars throughout this set which includes appearances with bands led by Benny Carter, Coleman Hawkins, Rex Stewart, harmonica wizard Larry Adler, trumpeter Philippe Brun, trumpeter Bill Coleman, violinist Eddie South, and trombonist Dicky Wells, along with many performances by the Quintet. The first album is in some ways the most interesting for it features Django as a sideman with a wide variety of French groups, including two very early appearances on banjo. A book included in the box has a complete discography of Django Reinhardt's career. Highly recommended, it's superior to the CD reissues of some of this material.
