For a short while in the early 1960’s – about two years altogether - Dionne was the QUEEN of soul. Make that: UNDISPUTED Queen of Soul. There is no simply way to describe how important and influential her early 1960's gentle, soulful blend of soul, gospel and pop - brilliantly written and produced by David Hall and Burt Bacharach - was. The soul music, as we know it today, was pretty much formed in the early sixties, by the likes of Sam Cooke, Jackie Wilson and, yes, Dionne Warwick. Her smooth, velvety, feminine voice blends perfectly with Burt Bachrach's delicate, super-intricate , gentle melodies and Hall's heartfelt lyrics. Nobody ever sounded like this - before or after. What we have here is Dionne's rarest and most coveted album - unlike other titles in her catalog, which are common and ubiquitous, this one is next to impossible to find in good shape, and comes in the GLORIOUS MONO version for maximum listening impact. Simply gorgeous, not to be missed. Track listing: Anyone who had a heart - Shall I tell her - Don't make me over - I cry alone - Getting ready for the heartbreak - Oh Lord, what are you doing to me - Any old time of day - Mr. Heartbreak - Put yourself in my place - I could make you mine - This empty place - Please make him love me
For its extraordinary contribution to the modern music, superb production, craftsmanship, fine musicianship, revolutionary significance and influence it exerted on numerous generations of musicians, writers and general public, or for some other innate quality, British version of this album ("Presenting Dionne Warwick" [not to be confused with the US album of the same name]) was voted one of top-200 albums of all time in one of the largest poll of critics, music reviewers, professionals and producers ever organized: the poll, which was conducted by Paul Gambaccini, legendary BBC Radio A&R man, surveyed more than 50 top music professionals (including Roy Carr, Jonathan Cott, Robert Christgau, Cameron Crowe, Chet Flippo, Ben Fong-Torres, Charlie Gillett, Greil Marcus, Murray the K., Lenny Kaye , Bruce Morrow (a/k/a "Cousin Brucie"), Tim Rice (of "Jesus Christ Superstar" and "Evita" fame), Lisa Robinson, Robert Shelton (who wrote liner notes for Bob Dylan's first album), Ed Ward, Joel Whitburn, Pete Wingfield, etc.). · CONDITION:
· RECORD
(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)
(a) WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VERY GOOD+ . CAUTION: The vinyl is NOT MINT or NEAR MINT, but is nevertheless in a very nice and clean condition. There are some surface marks and abrasions, mostly light and superficial, although some may be longer than 1.1/4 inches (1 inch = 2.5 centimeters) Please note: the record plays with audible, but consistent, surface noise, but without any distortion.
(b) Important disclosure: VISUALLY, THE RECORD IS STRONG VERY GOOD+. HOWEVER, WE CAUTION THAT a low-grade, heavily carbonated vinyl (typical of the budget labels of the 1950’s and 1960’s) used for this pressing has some 'bubbles' on the surface. This minor manufacturing flaw does not have any significant effect on playing (the record does NOT skip or 'stick' during the playback) but might cause a light click or pop here and there)
(c) The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!
(d) Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
