For auction is a true treasure and a piece of American musical history - the Dinwiddie Colored Quartet singing Gabriel's Trumpet. The one-sided Victor record plays through fine and strong. As expected, there is some background noise/hiss and some clicks but it does NOT overpower the music or vocals - a thorough groove cleaning will probably help. The record surface is clean with some scratches and minor scuffs. Label is rather clean - no stickers, writing, tears, or large needle scratches. The record is in fine shape and is worthy of any collection!
The Dinwiddie Colored Quartet is purported to be the first commercially recorded African American vocal group. Formed in Dinwiddle County, Virginia at the turn of the 20th century. in 1902 they traveled to Camden, New Jersey and recorded 6 tracks (on the 29th and 31st of October, 1902) for Victor. These songs were released as six single-sided records. The Dinwiddie Colored Quartet was comprised of Sterling Rex, Harry B. Cruder, J. Clarence Meredith, and J. Mantell. The record up for auction is one of the recordings made during that historic 1902 recording session - it is a true bit of American musical and social history.

*GRADING NOTES:
Regardless of the standards used, all record grading is somewhat subjective - that's just the nature of the beast. However, I utilize the VJM standard grading guidelines for assigning record grades for 78RPM recordings. Play-grading can be confusing - as the quality and performance of equipment used for playback can make a world of difference in what is heard. For instance, the sound heard from a multi-thousand dollar system will differ significantly from a cheap 1970's-vintage plastic turntable with inferior speakers. I try to grade conservatively based on my experience, preferences, and equipment. Please take a look at my feedback to see that I try to be accurate and honest in assiging record grades, and, email with any questions in advance. Thanks.....
PACKING NOTES:
I ship 33 and 78 RPM records in new rigid record mailer boxes from Bags Unlimited (you can go their website and see what I'm talking about). These boxes are specifically designed to protect the record from crushing, breakage, and damage in transit. I have found these to be the most effective, and, the safest mailers for vintage recordings. Although occasionaly even these mailers cannot stand up to abuse and mis-handling in transit, the chances of a safe delivery are much greater by my using them - please take a look at my feedback to see what others have said!
