DINAH WASHINGTON was a major Jazz, Blues, R&B and Pop singer. Because of her strong voice and emotional singing, she is known simply as The Queen. She cut her first date for Mercury/EmArcy Records in January 1946, and by the summer of ’48 her star was in rapid ascension. During this time, WASHINGTON recorded with major Jazz players CLIFFORD BROWN, CLARK TERRY, MAX ROACH, EDDIE "LOCKJAW" DAVIS and CANNONBALL ADDERLY. In the mid-Fifties, she utilized QUINCY JONES’s budding talents as an arranger, and employed WYNTON KELLY, JIMMY COBB, and tenor sax man EDDIE CHAMBLEE in her combo for extended stretches. (Chamblee was also one of her many husbands.) With "What a Diff'rence a Day Makes" in 1959, WASHINGTON won a Grammy Award for Best Rhythm and Blues Performance. The song was her first big hit in the Pop charts. In 1960, she teamed with Mercury artist Brook Benton and the two had back-to-back Top Ten hit duets: "Baby (You've Got What It Takes)" and "A Rockin' Good Way (To Mess Around and Fall In Love)". Before her untimely passing on December 14, 1963 Dinah was a prolific recording artist who left behind a stunning legacy that spanned many different musical styles. Her powerful and unique voice was hers and hers alone, but she influenced many singers who followed in her footsteps.
This is a CLASSIC early recording of DINAH accompanied by LUCKY THOMPSON, JOE WILDER, ERNIE ROYAL, CHARLIE SHAVERS, CLARK TERRY, JIMMY CLEVELAND, URBIE GREEN, QUENTIN JACKSON, HAL McKUSICK, JEROME RICHARDSON, DOC SEVERINSON, JIMMY MAXWELL, ERNIE WILKINS, BARRY GALBRAITH, ANTHONY ORTEGA, BENNY GOLSEN et al! This record is perfect for DINAH WASHINGTON fans, RHYTHM & BLUES and POP lovers and BOP JAZZ COLLECTORS!
