13. DEVIL DOLL: “The Girl Who Was…Death†(Private Fan Club release) (Record: Mint/ Fold Out jacket: Mint/ Printed Inner Sleeve: Mint) Here you have another rarity that is hardly ever offered for sale since copies barely surface at all, of what is considered by fanatics (not me though) as Devil Doll’s unheralded masterpiece. Devil Doll has to be one of the most bizarre, frightening and confronting bands in existence hovered in a veil of secrecy and mystery. Their music is a chilly assault on the senses, a unique and possessing atmosphere one seldom finds in music. Devil Doll has quite a fan base and those people are clearly in awe of the music and its creator. The music possesses an elaborate tapestry of styles, a surreal exploration of the unknown territories that the band describes as theatre of the mind. Intense and dramatic, pervaded with Gothic and often spooky elements. The man behind it all, Mr. Doctor as he calls himself, self sustains a mysterious and an in secrecy enshrouded character that would make even Mizutani of the Rallizes blush. No interviews were ever granted and concerts are far and few in between. "The Devil Doll sect" began in 1987 under the guidance of Mr. Doctor. In those early days the band was split in two parts - one based in Italy and the other one in Slovenia. That same year the band recorded "The Mark of The Beast" but only one copy was pressed. In 1988 the band began working on "The Girl Who Was Death" (with producer Jurij Toni, who is most known for working with Laibach), a suite in seventeen parts that explored themes from the cult British TV show "The Prisoner". The album was released by the Devil Doll’s fan club own label, Hurdy Gurdy Records and followed by a second live performance of "The Girl Who Was Death", at which 150 of 500 copies of the album were given away to the audience, while the remaining 350 copies were destroyed by Mr. Doctor. So is the story at least that surrounds this disc, making it a quite sought after artifact. Music wise the best description I can come up with is a cross-pollination effort between heavy metal with Italian progressive rock while humping a deranged theatrical singer. Rare to say the least.
