Vinyl: VG/VG+ Play Graded. Sounds Very Good!  Atco  Labels are Clean and Bright.  This is the audiophile acclaimed 1970 ATCO 1st Pressing!  SD 2-704, pressed at Monarch Record Mfg. Co., Los Angeles, CA!!  This was a major band in the beginning of the 1970s.  Eric's famous and infamous and barely veiled ode to George Harrison's wife, Patty...OOh-La-La...It has the chops to match the hype:  Bell Bottom Blues is worth the price of admission alone, but you also have a defining cover of Little Wing, a great Tell The Truth and of course, there's Layla...  Dream team consisting of Duane Allman, Eric Clapton, Carl Radle, Klaus Voormann and a host of others.   Classic  Boogie, Blues Rock!!  Classic Rock defined! ...all music gives it 4 stars!!!

Cover: VG/VG+ (see photos) Gatefold.  Nice high gloss on cover.  Front, gatefold and back of cover artwork and text are rich, clear and bright, with minor ring and shelf wear.  Also some paper damage on the bottom center of back, front and gatefold.  Seams, corners and spine are solid and clean, with some wear.  No splits.  No writing.  Spine print is crystal clear.

Why buy a first or early pressing and not a re-issue or a ‘re-mastered’ vinyl album? 
First and early pressings are pressed from the first generation lacquers and stampers. They usually sound vastly superior to later issues/re-issues (which, in recent times, are often pressed from whatever 'best' tapes or digital sources are currently available) - many so-called 'audiophile' new 180g pressings are cut from hi-res digital sources…essentially an expensive CD pressed on vinyl.  Why  experience the worse elements of both formats?  These are just High Maintenance CDs, with mid-ranges so cloaked with a veil as to sound smeared.  They are nearly always compressed with murky transients and a general lifelessness in the overall sound.  There are exceptions where re-masters/re-presses outshine the original issues, but they are exceptions and not the norm.  First or early pressings nearly always have more immediacy, presence and dynamics. The sound staging is wider.  Subtle instrument nuances are better placed with more spacious textures. Balances are firmer in the bottom end with a far-tighter bass. Upper-mid ranges shine without harshness, and the overall depth is more immersive.  Inner details are  clearer.   On first and early pressings, the music tends to sound more ‘alive’ and vibrant.  The physics of sound energy is hard to clarify and write about from a listening perspective, but the best we can describe it is to say that you can 'hear' what the mixing and mastering engineers wanted you to hear when they first recorded the music.  

Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs Review

Wishing to escape the superstar expectations that sank Blind Faith before it was launched, Eric Clapton retreated with several sidemen from Delaney & Bonnie to record the material that would form Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs. From these meager beginnings grew his greatest album. Duane Allman joined the band shortly after recording began, and his spectacular slide guitar pushed Clapton to new heights. Then again, Clapton may have gotten there without him, considering the emotional turmoil he was in during the recording. He was in hopeless, unrequited love with Pattie Boyd, the wife of his best friend, George Harrison, and that pain surges throughout Layla, especially on its epic title track. But what really makes Layla such a powerful record is that Clapton, ignoring the traditions that occasionally painted him into a corner, simply tears through these songs with burning, intense emotion. He makes standards like "Have You Ever Loved a Woman" and "Nobody Knows You (When You're Down and Out)" into his own, while his collaborations with Bobby Whitlock -- including "Any Day" and "Why Does Love Got to Be So Sad?" -- teem with passion. And, considering what a personal album Layla is, it's somewhat ironic that the lovely coda "Thorn Tree in the Garden" is a solo performance by Whitlock, and that the song sums up the entire album as well as "Layla" itself.
