Label/Format: Purple with matt, quite smooth surfaces. This first pressing has correct ‘Gramophone Co Ltd’ text on the rims, even slightly later pressings had this changed to ‘EMI’.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only light, very few and quite faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Brief Info: The seventh Deep Purple album, and another that sold well, especially in Europe where it topped several album charts. It started a slight change of direction to a more blues-style heavy rock, the ever-popular live favourite ‘Woman From Tokyo’ is included. However, friction between band members and fatigue was setting in, and it proved the last album to feature Ian Gillan and Roger Glover for several years. Most fans loved the album although critic’s reviews were slightly more mixed. This is a lovely original that appears hardly played and less-seen as an original in this fine all-round condition.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): a gatefold format with front and back laminated, the inside is matt and smooth. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse, includes the white polylined inner and purple lyric sheet insert.

Lamination – Front & Back: The laminate retains excellent shine, freshness and clarity with no lifting, any dulling only modest seen under light. Few creases, none heavy and mostly near the edges. Overall a very fine looking original cover both sides.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Little to fault inside, overall, any ageing slight.

Top Edges: Both straight and flush with smooth hardly worn surfaces.

Bottom Edges: Similar, a trace of card panel end thickening on the storage edges.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Both closed and open back edges are mostly sharp with any thickening little and light as seen viewed end-on.

Spine and Text: The yellow surface spine is still this colour, possibly a little faded, but some actually lose all colour over time. Solid, straight with only light compression near the top, folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. The text is unworn and strong under the solid and uncracked laminate, also nicely centred on a quite narrow depth as-seen.

Corners: Any tip rubs small and light, excellent shape mostly retained with no knocks.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this impressive 1970’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This attractive item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: the white polylined inner has gently aged with the usual darkening of the seam area edge adhesive. It has few creases, any gentle and light with mild natural crinkle. Both window circles are crisp and undamaged, the lining very fresh and unusually very clear. A couple of tiny edge nicks apart, all are naturally intact. This includes the patent text 1125555 and 1072844.

The Lyric Insert Sheet: EXCELLENT(+): the deep purple lyric sheet is printed on one side on thick paper and has no hard creasing, any crinkle only light. The surface is semi-shiny. No tears and still clean and fresh, this is guaranteed original.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++)/(+): arguably better. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and solidly pressed. A copy appearing hardly played on all the evidence with any surface marks few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright light. Just a tiny mark on ‘Our Lady’ emits a couple of very faint ticks and little else on the record. Viewed in average room light, hardly anything even registers. Visually a super record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This Deep Purple classic plays even above it’s high visual grading with hardly anything to fault bar the micro-blemish mentioned in the grading para. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is a very clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises. Few available copies will outperform this early first pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing of note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this lovely record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
