THE BAND'S previous album 'Made In Japan' had elevated Deep Purple to beyond super star status in the world of heavy rock setting them on a pedistal shared only by Led Zeppelin. Strangely, then, 'Who Do You Think You rae' was, at the time, received as something of a disappointment becoming, in effect, the long lost DP opus. The one that everybody has forgotten about. A record usurped by other more popular studio albums such as 'In Rock', 'Burn', 'Machine Head' and the aforementioned 'Made In Japan'.
Those sentiments are, on reflection, rather unfair as the album showcases the band getting to grips with their real destiny as the godfather's of hard rock riffhem. 'Rat Bat Blue' for example revels in the need to expound on a singularly brutal riff set to stun by Blackmore, whilst 'Place In Line' treds the trad blues path with a deregular side step that never once falls into what Zeppelin might have opted for. 'Our Lady' mops up the last of whatever psychedelia might have been present in the bands DNA.
Of course, the album will be chiefly remembered for the inclusion of 'Woman From Tokyo' one of the bands best and most identifiable riffs (almost as famous as 'Smoke On The Water') and with great vocals from Gillan. Look out too for 'Mary Long', a long forgotten Purple classic. 'Super Trooper' dips its toe into the same riff power as they tapped with 'Rat Bat Blue'.
A solid, dependable and surpribgly hard hitting record that has been burried beneath other Purple accomplishments for far too long. Listening to this album is like discovering a long lost treasure, a forgotten relic from a musical unit that never ceases to impress.
This auction is part of a fantastic collection of seventies rock which I was lucky enough to acquire. Most of these records were stored with the utmost care and sparsely played. Some were possibly never played or may have been for just a handful of times.

Vinyl: Nice clean condition. Displays some faint spindle marks on labels. Grades as a nice MINT-!
Cover: Again, virtually no signs of use. Issued in a fully laminated gatefold cover. The laminate is unworn and extremely shiny - looks like it stepped out of the factory yesterday. Sharp corners, no dings, no split seams, no ring wear, no creases and no sticker tears. Stiff uncrushed spine with beautiful 'creak' appeal on opening. A beautiful example of this amazing album. Grades as a very strong MINT-!
