DEEP PURPLE “Shades Of Deep Purple” Original 1968 Parlophone Sample/Promo Psych M-

1968/UK/Parlophone Records PCS 7055…. here’s a clean original pressing of this ultra rare lp. The laminated flap back cover is in solid clean condition with corner dings/wear right side corners, left side corners have tip wear, slightest shelf wear, perfect fully legible spine, otherwise the cover is solid and clean with no splits, tears or writing. The vinyl is in glossy Excellent condition with only very few super light inaudible hairlines/scuffs. The record looks and plays clean with very light noise mainly between tracks and at cue and plays with clean fidelity! Nice clean labels show only minimal light light spindle marks. Includes the original inner sleeve which is a bit aged and the bottom seam is partially split, otherwise it's fine. A gorgeous clean copy of this ultra rare 45 year old DEMO copy! Don't miss it! Rehearsing began in February, after Nick Simper, Jon Lord, Ritchie Blackmore and Ian Paice (as yet without an appropriate drum kit) had hired Rod Evans to sing after some auditions. Their first rehearsals (Paice having now acquired his favoured drum kit) involved mostly jamming and some occasional glimpses with the instrumentals "And The Address" and "Mandrake Root", which Blackmore had written earlier that year. (Mandrake Root was also the name of an earlier band that Blackmore had been trying to form in Germany when the call came from Deep Purple's management.) Their previous test-singer, Chris Curtis had been wanting to add a cover of a Beatles song to an eventual album and therefore the first proper song that was set in motion turned out to be "Help!". "Mandrake Root" was given lyrics, so the album would feature only one instrumental. Then, with those three well inducted, the band started to think on "I'm So Glad", a song by Skip James, which had earlier been covered by Cream. Ian Paice and Rod Evans had also recorded the song earlier, with their band The Maze. It was to be proven typical with Deep Purple in these early years that all the cover songs recorded were considerably longer and more grandiose than the originals. "I'm So Glad" was certainly no exception. When the track was recorded, the first movement of Scheherazade was added before the actual song began. The next song added to the rehearsals was "Hey Joe", a song originally, but disputably, written by Billy Roberts and mistakenly credited to "Deep Purple" on original releases of the Shades album. The Jimi Hendrix Experience had recorded a version of this song in late 1966 and this was used as the main inspiration. But as well as "I'm So Glad", the song was heavily blown up and stretched in length. Joe South had written a song for Billy Joe Royal the previous year, called "Hush" and this song was also picked up by the band.

GRADING

MINT: I consider only New Unplayed or Sealed items.

M- or Mint Minus, very clean with clean visual appearance and sound, there may be a couple of light inaudible hairline scuffs or such and will be mentioned in the listing, a Mint- record looks and plays clean. Same for the cover. Very clean with no delete or other issues.

EXCELLENT: still very collectable for most, visually and sonicly clean. A handful of light inaudible scuffs, or hairlines. Cover will be clean with little wear, or delete. No splits.

VG++ still a very nice copy with minimal wear, the vinyl will retain it's original gloss and can have a few minor scuffs/scratches that don't affect play very much. Cover will have slight shelf wear, and or delete, minor split.

VG+ the vinyl will still retain much original gloss with a bit more scuffs and/or scratches I may list a very rare or desirable item with a lower grade, I will try to list all defects.
