Deep Purple : Machine Head A1 / B1 inc Lyric Poster
This first pressing plays to an unbelievable standard and 'as new' is an honest appraisal of the audio. The clarity, depth and power of the audio is second to none and there is just no intrusion on the audio at all, it is stunning! There really are no faults and this is very much FINAL UPGRADE time-warp classic. You could not wish to find a more 'complete' version! The vinyl is also in beautiful condition and has been so well preserved over the decades. It is close to 50 years old now of course and they are rarely seen as impressive as this!
The gatefold is in superb condition also with hardly any wear and the original fold out lyric sheet has been preserved extremely well with no rips or tears. The original EMI inner is also in great condition. A fantastic 'package' all round!
As this is a genuine first press there is no EMI logo on the labels and has 'The Gramophone Co. Ltd' around the top of the perimeter edge and 'Made In Gt. Britain' at the foot of the label. And of course the A1U/B1U matrix.

Visual grading
This vinyl is visually stunning and still has an immaculate jet-black glossy sheen. There are no marks or scratches just some very faint sleeve removal hairlines on each side that obviously have no impact on the stunning audio. There is no groove wear and all the grooves are incredibly clean. The run out grooves are also super clean as are labels which have no marking or writing. They do have a little spindle wear but this record has clearly only been played on 'high end' equipment helping it retain its original quality. A stunning vinyl in every way!
Play grading
The classic 'Highway Star' plays with incredible audio from start to finish with no sign of any interference. The 'high octane' intro has such power and depth and Gillan's first vocal is just as good. It continues in the same exact way and I cannot adequately put into words just how strong this version is! Every note is so clean and precise and the mid instrumental is just off the scale! This kind of clarity and definition only comes from a record that has been so well preserved and only lightly played down the years. Again Blackmore's solo towards the end has never sounded better and the final vocal section plays to perfection also. This is a Mint start to the side without doubt.
'Maybe I'm A Leo' is of the same 'high end' standard with stunning sonic quality throughout. There is no intrusion on the audio - no ticks, clicks or pops and no static either. Just 3/4 barely audible dust ticks and again the depth and warmth of the audio is 'as new'. A perfect fade out also. Another Mint track.
The percussive intro on 'Pictures Of Home' is faultless and then plays with that familiar power and depth that is classic Purple. There is no need to overelaborate - each vocal and instrumental section plays with remarkable clarity and depth and basically sounds as good as it would have done nearly 50 years ago! No loss in quality and Mint is very much deserved.
The intro on 'Never Before' plays perfectly as does the first verse. The audio is so deep and rich and again the playback cannot be faulted. It proceeds to play with such precision and power and for once there is no inner groove distortion, another sign this record has not been played very much. You will not be surprised to hear this this final tracks has no interference from start to finish and it provides a mega impressive Mint finish to the side. And what a side!
----------------------------------------------------------------------- The iconic intro on 'Smoke On The Water' could not play with any greater clarity and for the opening grooves to play as 'cleanly' as this is a rarity especially on a record of this age! The entire intro is 'as new' and the first verse and chorus are of the same standard. There is literally no intrusion on the audio and I must point out just how clear and accurate the playback is - you can just imagine yourself back in '72 listening to this for the first time! Not a single dust tick anywhere, not even on the fade out - this is the most 'complete' version you could ever wish to hear and Mint is again an easy grade to give.
I have listened to the long intro on 'Lazy' twice now just to confirm what I heard the first time! Wow what sonic quality! The clarity is STUNNING and remember there are a number of quiet sections. If you listen very carefully you can detect a handful of barely audible dust ticks but that hardly qualifies as interference! As the tempo increases there is no let up in quality and it continues to play with unbelievable power and depth. The vocal sections then play with sublime clarity and the remainder does not disappoint...of course! I don't wish to repeat myself but this is MINT every day of the week!
'Space Truckin' ends this incredible album with...incredible audio! This 'high octane' number has lost none of its original quality and again there is no inner groove distortion. The audio is so dynamic throughout and yep I'm running out of superlatives to describe the quality of the audio! Suffice to say every section is 'as new' with no interference. The grooves on any final track are often compressed closer together and yet it as impressive as the preceding tracks. As I often say this is a track that just demands to be played loud - it definitely does not lose any of its original sonic quality. This is a stunning Mint finish to this classic album.
In summary this easily qualifies as a FINAL UPGRADE first pressing you will not be surprised to hear and may well be the most STUNNING example I have ever had the pleasure in listening to. Having played every second of every track (sometimes twice) I can guarantee the audio is absolutely flawless with not one tick, click or pop on either side and there is no underlying static or distortion either. This is the DEFINITIVE version in my opinion and has been beautifully preserved down the years. The clarity, depth, power and warmth of the audio provides more than enough evidence why we listen to vinyl. You just cannot replicate this sonic quality by any other medium. What an album!
The Gatefold, Lyric Poster & Inner Sleeve
The laminated G & L gatefold is in superb condition with barely any shelf wear. The edges and wide spine have no marking and the latter just has one tiny laminate split at the bottom which is hardly worth a mention! All of the corners are incredibly clean with no obvious wear and the opening edge is near perfect also. The front cover is stunning with no laminate damage, just a tiny 'ding' in the bottom right corner and a small number of the usual faint creases around the edges. The back cover is also in superb shape with only one very small faint scuff and a minor crease bottom left. The inside of the gatefold is immaculate. A fantastic example overall.
The fold out lyric poster is near perfect with no tears or marks and very little creasing. The original EMI company sleeve is equally as good with no side splits, tears or marking and no obvious creasing.
