Label/Format: Harvest – Yellow and green format. This ‘first pressed’ format copy has no EMI logo and includes the ‘GRAMOPHONE CO LTD’ text on the rims. Later pressings included the small boxed EMI logo and the text was changed to EMI Co Ltd.

Label Conditions: Both generally clean, still fresh and attractive with spindle marks light+ and less than moderate. Just the odd faint handling traces on side one but little detracts from these early splendid labels. To be clear, this record plays superbly well as well with barely anything of any note unwanted. It was a real to play-grade.

Cat Number: SHVL 777.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 134 grams. A very good weight, later copies invariably thinner.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Arguably Deep Purple’s finest and most treasured album, their fourth and the one that really won them ‘mass’ appeal after a patchy start with the band performing cover versions and really going nowhere very fast in commercial terms. A new vocalist was introduced – Ian Gillan – and now performing their own material, a new ‘supergroup’ was born. An album of hard-edged riffs and vocals of the highest calibre – few singers could even live with the power behind him – but this new formula worked perfectly. ‘In Rock’ quickly became one of the heavy rock classics of all-time and this contains several of the band’s finest anthems including the awesome ‘Child in Time’ and ‘Speed King’. My favourite song here however is the lesser mentioned final song, ‘Hard Lovin’ Man’ that simply drives and flows from the speakers with channel-to-channel pyrotechnics – with speed – a hugely impressive track. Special mention here to for Lord’s superb keyboards, his fairly recent death would have saddened fans. Keyboard players within heavy bands often do not get the praise they should – this man was VERY special indeed and helped give Deep Purple their almost unique sound. This album sold well, and peaking at 4 in the UK (but only a poor 143 in the US) it has to be one of the very best issued on this famous progressive label. A very fine all-round example – lovely clean little-worn cover and a record, although played a few times, still offering very impressive, clean distortion-free sound. Also an excellent pressing devoid of crackle and issues. It will not prove easy to find much better.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): a gatefold format, laminated front and back, the inside matt finished and smooth. On this one, the laminate ends inside on the bottom edges – some omit this detail and are tucked inside. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd. Included is the Harvest promotional inner that is also very impressive.

Cover Cosmetic Improvements: None Apparent.

Lamination – Front & Back: The laminate retains a fine shine, freshness and clarity. With total adhesion as well, yes no blisters or lifting, this makes a huge difference for visual pleasure. Under angled light a little light dulling is seen, but in terms of this, only mild. A few small and very light edge hairlines with no creasing away from the sides at all. Even the quite wide end strips on the right where the laminate ends naturally short of full width are unworn with any grubbiness mild and light.

Cover Inside: Clean, fresh with barely anything to fault bar the odd tiny corner tip crease or two. The laminate ends on the bottom edges with any darkening to the end very light and mostly none. What I especially like about this inside is the lack of fingermarks on the matt black areas, this being one of the cleanest and least ‘touched’ insides I have seen on this cover for some time – it makes a real difference.

Top & Bottom Edges: All four retain full laminate and are still ultra smooth and scuff-free. Straight and meeting up close to flush and square.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Both very clean and sharp with again barely any hint of wear or thickening. A tiny wave near the top of the front seen viewed end-on, but this is being quite critical. Record enters on the back edge, both guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with ALL of the laminate retained with no peeling, flaking or cracking – this very unusual. A tiny few very small lifts on what is a much thicker spine than some I have seen. All text is perfect and there is no crushing or sinkage of the characters. All very attractive overall.

Corners: Tiny tip rubs to the bottom right pair, little else. Excellent shape or better retained.

Cover Summary: A very fine example of this very famous rock cover, this does it strong justice and will please many collectors.

The Harvest Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): when you see inner sleeves this clean and unworn, it gives great confidence the record will be similar – and in this case, true. This one retains the polylining (that never guaranteed) and has barely any creasing, all edges unsplit with no repairs. These famous Harvest promotional inners are so often missing or very aged and tatty, this is a still a very nice looking example and even these are becoming increasingly hard to find as such.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): and arguably better. Clean with very fine shine and solidly pressed. Any surface marks are minimal, very fine and faint as seen more critically under bright angled light. Viewed normally in daylight conditions, this is hugely impressed and it sounds the same. One to please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: An early example that plays even above its visual grading with barely anything to fault. An album that does have some very quiet passages but these play well with any surface sound registering little. My Linn LP12 takes no prisoners in revealing all what is good as well as bad on any record – and there is nothing bad about this copy. Few copies will play the ultra quiet passages silently – remember this record is around 44 years old, and most likely few were even clinically perfect from new. That being a plain fact as many music fans my age will testify. Any record this great age has almost earned the right to have the odd minor sound blemish, but this hardly any of note at all. Overall, strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. The stereo imagery is fantastic especially on the final track. I consider this a fairly challenging album and few early examples will better it significantly. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this hard rock classic. Strong recommendation applies and most will be happy I feel sure.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
