Label/Format: Harvest – Yellow and green format. This ‘first pressed’ format copy has no EMI logo and includes the ‘GRAMOPHONE CO LTD’ text on the rims. Later pressings included the small boxed EMI logo and the text was changed to EMI Co Ltd.

Label Conditions: Both clean still fresh and attractive with spindle marks light and moderate. These are mostly fine with modest visibility largely under angled light. Just a few more than I normally offer but this record still offers very impressive sound quality. The plain fact-of-the-matter is, some owners used the label as a guide to locate the spindle and often have little bearing on the number of actual plays.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 135 grams. A very good weight, later copies invariably thinner.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Arguably Deep Purple’s finest and most treasured album, their fourth and the one that really won them ‘mass’ appeal after a patchy start with the band performing cover versions and really going nowhere very fast in commercial terms. A new vocalist was introduced – Ian Gillan – and now performing their own material, a new ‘supergroup’ was born. An album of hard-edged riffs and vocals of the highest calibre – few singers could even live with the power behind him – but this new formula worked perfectly. ‘In Rock’ quickly became one of the heavy rock classics of all-time and this contains several of the band’s finest anthems including the awesome ‘Child in Time’ and ‘Speed King’. My favourite song here however is the lesser mentioned final song, ‘Hard Lovin’ Man’ that simply drives and flows from the speakers with channel-to-channel pyrotechnics – with speed – a hugely impressive track. Special mention here to for Lord’s superb keyboards, his fairly recent death would have saddened fans and most rock fans. Keyboard players within heavy bands often do not get the praise they should – this man was VERY special indeed and helped give Deep Purple their almost unique sound. This album sold well, and peaking at 4 in the UK (but only a poorly 143 in the US) it has to be one of the very best issued on this famous progressive label. A very fine all-round example – lovely clean shiny cover and a record, although played a few times, still offering very pleasing, clean distortion-free sound.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): a gatefold format, laminated front and back, the inside matt finished and smooth. On this one, the laminate ends inside on the bottom edges – some omit this detail and are tucked inside. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd. Included is the Harvest promotional inner that is also impressive.

Cover Cosmetic Improvements: None Apparent.

Lamination – Front & Back: The laminate retains a fine shine, freshness and clarity. With total adhesion as well, yes no blisters or lifting, this makes a huge difference for visual pleasure. Even under angled light, barely any hint of dulling and even rim impression on the back minimal and faint as are any minor marks or creasing. This classic, almost iconic cover will not prove easy to find much better.

Cover Inside: Clean, fresh with barely anything to fault bar the odd tiny corner tip crease. The laminate ends on the bottom edges free of grime and discolouration that blight so many.

Top & Bottom Edges: All four retain full laminate and are still ultra smooth and scuff-free. Straight and meeting up close to flush, just a mere friction off-square.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Both very clean and sharp with again barely any hint of wear or thickening. Record enters on the back edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with ALL of the laminate retained with no peeling, flaking or cracking – this very unusual. A little natural recess ridge from opening so the text is very slightly ‘sunken’ which is normal on this type of fold construction. In fact many of these shed all their laminate freely, but as stated this is FULLY intact and ultra smooth and scuff-free. There is no wear or chipping to the fully covered text.

Corners: Any tip rubbing is tiny as is any tip creasing. Very fine to excellent shape retained.

Cover Summary: A very fine example of this very famous rock cover, this does it near maximum justice and will please many, if not most collectors.

The Harvest Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: actually looking better, only marked down a little due to the usual darkening and toning of the seam adhesive. This one retains the polylining (that never guaranteed) and has very little creasing, all edges unsplit with no repairs. These famous Harvest promotional inners are so often missing or replaced, this is a still a very nice looking, and for some, perfectly ‘aged’ example.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR EXCELLENT: still an impressive visual copy that is clean wtih fine shine and very solidly pressed. Any surface marks are mostly very fine and faint as seen more critically under bright angled light, the odd one a little more noticeable, but there are NO penetrating scratches – hence no pops or clicks noted. Played a few times for sure, but still a lovely pre-EMI copy that offers impressive sound overall.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: An early example that plays above its visual grading with very little to fault. An album that does have some very quiet passages but these play well with any surface sound very gentle, light and infrequent. My Linn LP12 takes no prisoners in revealing all what is good as well as bad on any record – and there is nothing bad about this copy. Few copies will play the ultra quiet passages silently – remember this record is around 44 years old, and most likely few were even clinically perfect from new. That being a plain fact as many music fans my age will testify. Any record this great age has almost earned the right to have a few minor sound blemishes but only just the odd polite reminder with only the gentlest crackle trace here and there. Overall, strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. The stereo imagery is fantastic especially on the final track. No pops or clicks were noted and this gives an impressive account of itself, I consider this a fairly challenging album and few early examples will better it significantly. Nothing of any real spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this hard rock classic. Not quite for the perfectionists, but most heavy rock fans will enjoy this – it merits high recommendation.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
