Description
Deep Purple : In Rock A2 / B1
This first pressing plays to a very high standard with very little intrusion on the audio. There is very little interference and the clarity and depth of the audio is very strong indeed. Not only that but the vinyl is visually stunning with no marking. Of course being a first press it has no EMI logo on the labels.
The gatefold is in great condition with only very minimal shelf wear and the original inner is also in excellent order.

Visual grading
The vinyl has been very well preserved and still has an impressive glossy sheen with no marks or scratches. Under a bright light I can only find a small number of very faint sleeve removal hairlines and I do mean faint! The grooves are so clean and this has definitely not been overplayed. There is not too spindle wear either.
Play grading
The 'high octane' intro on the classic 'Speed King' could not play any better - there is no interference and the power is immense! There is just a little static in the quieter section that follows and it then plays loud and true with no distortion. Lord's next piece has only very minimal static and the remainder of the track plays exceptionally well. There is perhaps just a minor hint of background static but it is so quiet as to be negligible. From start to finish there are no clicks or pops and Ex+ is more than deserved.
'Blood Sucker' plays in a very similar way with no obvious intrusion on the audio. There is barely any static and certainly no distortion. The depth and power of the audio is again so impressive and I would say Near Mint- is about right.
For once the quiet intro on 'Child In Time' is very clean and has only very minimal static and it progresses in much the same way. Yes there is a little background static every now and then but again it is so quiet and non-intrusive in my opinion. As the music builds there is barely any distortion and the playback is very strong indeed. Blackmore's solo is stunning in every way! The clarity and power cannot be underestimated. The next quieter section plays very clearly with barely any static and Gillan's vocal then has only a couple of minor crackle sounds but there is hardly any static. As it builds again there is a little distortion but nothing that makes you turn the volume down! The end section has a little more distortion (when isn't there?!) but it still plays very well with no other intrusion. This is Ex+ but with a final section that grades as Ex
----------------------------------------------------------------------- 'Flight Of The Rat' just has one dull click sound on the intro and then plays with great clarity and definition. There is a lot to like here! Lord's long instrumental piece is stunning! There is no 'background' and each note plays so precisely, there is definitely no groove wear here. This stunning audio continues into the next section and this has to be one of the finest versions of this track that I have heard. The sound is so clear and the final verses play with the same distinction. The percussive end section is faultless and whilst the intro is Ex I am so close to calling the remainder Mint- it is that good. However, I think Near Mint is perhaps a safer option although I may be doing myself a disservice!
The intro on 'Into The Fire' has no interference and the same applies to the first verse. It continues to play with very strong audio and there is a real depth to the sound here. It may not quite have the clarity of the first track but the clarity is still very impressive and it's difficult to find any negatives. There are no clicks or pops and no underlying static either. Near Mint-
The percussive intro on 'Living Wreck' plays perfectly and as the vocal begins there is no let up in quality. There is perhaps just a mild touch of very light intermittent static in the background but really it is so minimal and totally non-intrusive. The track still plays very clearly but I will grade as Ex+ just to err on the side of caution. Still no ticks, clicks or pops. Just listened to the final instrumental section again, it is stunning! Superb power and definition here and a super clean fade out.
'Hard Lovin' Man' has such a strong intro and the following quieter section is nigh on perfect also. The next up tempo instrumental piece plays with breathtaking quality and the first vocal can hardly be faulted either. It continues to play with such power and there is no distortion on the top end. Lord's rip-roaring solo is a case in point - wow it is stunning! From then on it plays with more or less perfect audio. There is certainly no obvious intrusion - perhaps not perfect clarity but that might just be me being too critical. This is a powerhouse of a track on a vinyl that is now 50 years old of course so you wouldn't expect 100% clarity but this is a stunning version and the all powerful section end section more than provides enough evidence of that. A touch of light static only here and I am more than confident in grading this as Near Mint- it is a stunning finish!
In summary this genuine first press plays to a very high standard with very little intrusion on the audio. There is only one very dull click type sound on S1 and only minimal static and the clarity is very impressive throughout. So often found played to death this particular copy certainly has not been and that is reflected on the super visual quality of the vinyl and of course the audio quality.
The Gatefold
The laminated G & L gatefold is in superb condition (for once) and has only minimal shelf wear. The edges have no rubbing and the spine is fully legible with only barely any wear on the corners. It does have some minor laminate splitting but is not immediately obvious and it remains a very clean spine. The right hand corners are in very good shape also with only a little wear and the opening edge is nigh on perfect. The front cover is in fantastic condition with no marking and only a couple of faint laminate creases and the back cover is just as good. The inside is also in superb condition with none of the staining/spotting that you so often see. It really is very clean and there is only very minor marking at the foot of the inner spine. One of finest examples I have seen in a long time.
The Inner Sleeve
The original poly-lined EMI/Harvest inner is in excellent condition and there are no side splits or tears, just one tiny 'nick' on the top edge. There is some age related fading around the edges and a little creasing also.
The Labels
The yellow/green labels (no EMI logo) are in superb order with no marking or writing and not too much spindle wear. They have lost none of their original colour.
