IN ROCK was a landmark album for Deep Purple and heavy metal music. It's an absolutely ferocious and unrelenting album that pushed the record levels well into the red, as evidenced by the slightly distorted master mixes. Although the Mark II lineup's first album together was CONCERTO FOR GROUP AND ORCHESTRA, IN ROCK was the first proper studio release for the classic line up of Blackmore, Lord, Paice, Gillan & Glover.

Replacing original vocalist & crooner Rod Evans was this young, scruffy looking banshee by the name of Ian Gillan. Gillan is showcased in the epic "Child In Time" that showcases his vocal range. Admittedly, he does get a little shrill when hitting those higher notes, but I still respect his passion. Joining the band on bass was Roger Glover, who locks in nicely with Ian Paice and provides some much needed heaviness to the proceedings.

Everyone in the band is completely GOING FOR IT, making for some amazing solo duels between Jon Lord & Ritchie Blackmore. Jon Lord is absolutely shredding his Hammond B-3 and pushing his Marshall & Leslie cabinets to their limits. Ritchie Blackmore can be at the very end of the album heard scraping his guitar across the control room window in “Hard Lovin’ Man”. Blackmore seems particularly inspired on this record and has taken his showmanship to another level, thanks in part to the influence of Jimi Hendrix. His manic solo breaks are a highlight throughout the album. 

Black Sabbath may have been heavy & menacing, but Deep Purple's impassioned performances and virtuoso musicianship are utterly savage. One of my favourite records of all time and a 10+ in my book.

Deep Purple's Mk I lineup, along with many others had already played a huge part laying the foundations for what was soon to become Heavy Metal. All the amplification that was coming from these bands soon introduced us to Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, and of course, Deep Purple Mk II.
Deep Purple Mk II really cranked it up, and therefore truly cemented Heavy Metal becoming an actual genre. There was no messing around with the likes of Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple, they individually created music that was their own. It was loud, diverse, and totally unique. 
Blackmore's hypnotic guitar playing is something to behold, but not only his playing stands out, the entire band play excellently, and Gillan's voice is fantastic.
There is no denying that this, along with the other first couple of albums released by Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and a few others are the reason Heavy Metal exists in so many different forms today, each band giving different depth and nuance, and for that reason, this is yet another absolute essential release of the early seventies revolution in rock.

Vinyl: EX . Stunning deep glossy and heavy vinyl. This has not been played much. A beautiful glossy vinyl with just one wispy short hairline on each side, both totally inaudible on replay with two low level ticks on side 1 . Under a strong light just some wispy retraction paper traces can be seen. These are totally invisible in normal light. I subjected the record to a detailed listen on my high end system and it sounded stunning. Esp. "Child In Time" is an absolute aural onslaught on a totally different level. I have never stopped loving this track since I first heard it all those decades ago. Lovely channel separation without any distortion or crackle. This vinyl is an upgrade for most heavy prog collectors.





Gatefold sleeve: EX.  Without doubt one of the hardest gatefold sleeves to still find intact!!  Fully laminated on the outside. "Printed and made by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd." The spine is still 100% legible. The opening is crisp.  Two small corner creases to the rear. Rich colours and splendid edges. NO splits or tears. The inside gatefold is EX with all lyrics printed.
